What Is Cannabis Curbside Pickup? Steps, ID, and State Rules

What cannabis curbside pickup is

Cannabis curbside pickup means you order from a licensed store, park in a marked spot outside, and a budtender brings the order to your car. You do not go inside. The handoff happens at the vehicle or at the door. The store must hold a state license to sell cannabis.

How the process works

1. Place the order. Most stores take orders by phone or through an online menu. You pick the products and the pickup window.
2. Wait for confirmation. The store checks stock and sends a text or email with an order number.
3. Drive to the store. Park in a curbside spot. Call or text the number on the sign.
4. Show ID. State law requires a government photo ID. Adult-use customers must be 21 or older. Medical patients can be 18 or older with a valid physician recommendation.
5. Pay and take the bag. Payment rules differ by state. Many stores take cash only, because cannabis is illegal under federal law and most banks will not process cannabis sales.

What you need at the curb

• Government photo ID, such as a driver's license or passport.
• The order confirmation number or the phone used to place the order.
• Payment. Cash is standard. Some stores have ATMs on site.
• A car in a legal parking spot. Some stores require the customer to stay in the vehicle.

Where curbside pickup exists

Cannabis rules come from state law, not federal law. A few states allow curbside pickup at licensed retailers. California's Department of Cannabis Control permits curbside delivery at the licensed premises. Massachusetts allowed curbside pickup for medical patients under emergency rules during the COVID-19 pandemic. Colorado issued similar emergency rules in 2020. Michigan set curbside rules for licensed retailers.

Some states never allowed it. Others allowed it as a temporary measure and ended it. City rules can be stricter than state rules, so two cities in the same state can differ.

Curbside pickup compared to delivery and in-store shopping

• Curbside pickup: you drive to the store, staff brings the order out, no entry.
• Delivery: the store brings the order to your address. Fewer states allow this.
• In-store: you walk in, show ID at the door, and buy at the counter.

Limits

Purchase limits apply to curbside orders. State caps are set by weight and product type, such as 1 ounce of flower for adult use in several states. Stores can set lower limits. Curbside orders cannot be resold. Some states ban curbside for adult-use customers and allow it for medical patients only.

Rules change. Check the state regulator's site and call the store before you drive. Confirm pickup hours, the payment method, and whether the store still runs curbside service.
