Cannabis Curbside Pickup for Medical Patients | Guide

Cannabis curbside pickup for medical patients

Curbside pickup means a dispensary employee brings a medical cannabis order out to a patient's vehicle. The patient stays in the car. State law decides if the store may offer it. Store policy decides if the store does offer it.

cannabis curbside pickup vs delivery

Some states allow curbside for medical patients only. Some allow it for adult-use customers too. Some ban it. Check your state cannabis regulator before you drive.

What Is Cannabis Curbside Pickup? Steps, ID, and State Rules

Who qualifies

• An active medical cannabis card or patient ID from your state.
• A government photo ID, such as a driver license or passport.
• Age 18 or older in most medical programs. Adult-use curbside requires 21 or older.
• An order placed and confirmed before you arrive, in most cases.

Steps at the store

1. Place the order online or by phone. Wait for the confirmation text or email.
2. Park in a marked curbside spot. Some stores use numbered bays.
3. Call or text the number on the sign. Give your name and order number.
4. Stay in the vehicle. Staff check your card and ID at the window or door.
5. Pay. Many states require cash or a debit PIN transaction. Card networks do not process cannabis sales.
6. Take the sealed bag. Do not open it in the car.

State rules

Several state regulators publish curbside rules for cannabis. Florida, Nevada and Pennsylvania issue curbside guidance for licensed dispensaries. Florida limits curbside to patients with a valid state medical marijuana ID card. Nevada lets dispensaries serve medical patients and adult-use customers at the curb. Pennsylvania ties curbside to medical marijuana dispensary guidance.

how does cannabis curbside pickup work

Other states leave the choice to the store. A dispensary in a state that permits curbside may still stop the service for staffing or security reasons.

Limits and legal points

• Purchase limits stay the same. Curbside does not raise a daily, weekly or 35-day cap.
• Consumption in a vehicle is illegal in every state. An open package or lit product can lead to a DUI charge.
• Some states bar curbside for first-time patients or require an in-store consult.
• Most programs require a pharmacist or staff consult at set intervals. Curbside staff can run that consult by phone.

What to bring

• State medical cannabis card
• Photo ID
• Cash or a debit card with a PIN
• Order confirmation number

When curbside is not available

A store may turn down curbside if the patient is new, if the card expired, or if local rules ban it. Medical delivery is a separate service in states that allow it. Ask the store which option applies to your order.
