What Does Lab Tested Mean for Cannabis Products?

What lab tested means for cannabis

A lab tested cannabis product has gone to an independent laboratory that measures its cannabinoids and screens the batch for contaminants. The results come back as a Certificate of Analysis, or COA, tied to one specific batch or lot. In states with legal cannabis, testing is part of the licensing rules, and a product cannot be sold until it passes.

Does Lab-Tested Cannabis Guarantee Safe? What a COA Really Proves

The phrase itself does not guarantee quality, and it does not mean the product is risk free. It means a sample from that batch met the limits your state sets. How much that is worth depends on which lab ran the test, what the test covered, and whether the COA matches the package in your hand.

what does lab tested mean cannabis products

What a cannabis lab test covers

  • Potency. THC, THCA, CBD, CBDA, CBN, CBG and other cannabinoids. Labs report total THC and total CBD. THCA becomes THC when heated, so total THC equals THC plus 0.877 times THCA.
  • Terpenes. Many states require a terpene panel on concentrates and vapes. Flower panels vary.
  • Pesticides. Screens for dozens of compounds at state action limits, which sit far below the limits used for food crops.
  • Heavy metals. Lead, arsenic, cadmium, and mercury.
  • Residual solvents. Leftover butane, ethanol, propane, and other extraction chemicals.
  • Microbials. Total yeast and mold, aerobic bacteria, and specific pathogens such as E. coli and Salmonella.
  • Mycotoxins. Aflatoxins and ochratoxin A from mold growth.
  • Moisture and water activity. Key markers for mold risk in flower.
  • Foreign matter. Hair, insect parts, and other debris.

How to check a COA before you buy

  1. Find the batch or lot number printed on the package.
  2. Match that number to the number on the COA. A COA for a different batch tells you nothing about your product.
  3. Confirm the lab name and license number, and check that the lab is licensed in the state where the product was made.
  4. Read the test date and compare it to the packaging date. Old results on a fresh package are a warning sign.
  5. Compare the labeled THC and CBD to the tested totals. A wide gap points to a labeling problem.
  6. Scan the pass or fail column for every contaminant panel, not just potency.
  7. Look at the reporting limits. A result of none detected is only as good as the lowest level the lab can measure.

Why the label and the COA can disagree

Labels are printed from a test result, and flower keeps changing after harvest. THC and terpene levels drift with time, light, heat, and moisture. Batches also get blended, so one jar may not represent the whole lot. A label reading of 28% THC can come from a single sample of a larger batch, and the number on the COA may be reported as an average or a range.

What a passing test does not tell you

A passing COA covers the panels the state requires. It does not cover every possible contaminant, and it says nothing about how the product will affect you. Potency does not predict the strength of the experience for every person, and a clean test does not make a product safe to drive with or safe to combine with alcohol or medication. Hemp derived products sold outside licensed dispensaries often carry lab claims with no state oversight at all.

Questions to ask at the counter

  • Can I see the COA for this batch?
  • Which lab ran the test, and when?
  • Is the potency number from this batch or from a parent batch?
  • Does the panel include pesticides, heavy metals, solvents, and microbials?
  • Was a vitamin E acetate screen run if this is a vape cartridge?
