If you want one name to start with, start here. SC Labs has been testing cannabis in Santa Cruz since 2010, back when the state had no framework for it, and it now serves cultivators, manufacturers, and retailers across California. Anresco Laboratories
San Francisco. Anresco has been running analytical chemistry since 1943, doing food and agricultural work decades before cannabis was a legal category. If your priority is a lab with a long paper trail and mature quality systems, this is the boring, reliable choice. The tradeoff is that cannabis is one line of business among several, so the cannabis-specific hand-holding is thinner.
CW Analytical Laboratories
Oakland. One of the first labs in the country to test cannabis, starting around 2009, and still known for microbiology and for working with smaller cultivators who need guidance on sampling. Smaller footprint than the multi-state chains, so check current capacity and turnaround before you book.
Encore Labs
Pasadena. A Southern California option that keeps LA-area brands from trucking samples north. Reasonable turnaround, straightforward reporting, good fit if you are producing in the LA basin and want a lab in your own traffic.
Kaycha Labs
The multi-state chain option. Useful when you operate in several states and want one reporting format across markets. The upside is process consistency and volume capacity. The downside is that a national lab can feel less plugged into California-specific regulatory quirks.
How I compare labs
- Scope of accreditation, not the certificate itself. ISO/IEC 17025 scope statements list each accredited method. Ask for the document and read it.
- License status for the specific test category you need, verified against the state's current list. Licenses get suspended.
- Turnaround time and sample pickup in your region. A brilliant lab four hours away is a logistics problem, not a solution.
- Limits of quantitation on the report. A pass means little if the detection limit is above the regulatory action level.
- Willingness to flag a failed batch instead of re-running it until it passes.
- Chain of custody paperwork that survives an audit.
