The surface gets a mulch layer and a cover crop such as clover. Growers top dress with compost and meals between cycles and water with drip lines or capillary mats. The microbial community persists. Soil structure improves run over run.

Super soil: $150 to $300 in amendments for one 8-bag batch, plus a 30 to 60 day wait. Living soil: $300 to $600 to fill a bed the first time, then $50 to $120 per cycle in top dressing. Water use in living soil runs about 5 to 10 percent of container volume per day, less under mulch.

No controlled trial compares the two on yield or cannabinoid content. Yield claims from either side are anecdotal.
