How to Amend Super Soil for Cannabis

You amend super soil by re-mineralizing the spent mix with measured organic inputs, moistening it to field capacity, and letting it cook for 3 to 4 weeks before use. Prerequisites

• Spent or fresh base soil, with 1 cubic foot as a convenient batch size
• Worm castings, blood meal, bone meal, bat guano, kelp meal, alfalfa meal
• Dolomite lime, rock phosphate, azomite or glacial rock dust
• Epsom salt and unsulfured molasses
• Tarp or 30-gallon tote, gloves, N95 mask, watering can
• pH meter and water sitting at 6.2 to 6.8

Re-amending Spent Super Soil

1. Put on gloves and an N95 mask, then move the work to a driveway, patio, or open yard so dust from bone meal and lime does not settle indoors.
2. Dump the spent soil onto a tarp and break apart the root mass by hand, pulling out any roots thicker than a pencil.
3. Measure the volume you are re-amending so every ratio stays consistent; one batch is 1 cubic foot, about 7.5 gallons.
4. Add 2 cups of worm castings per cubic foot and work them into the top half of the pile.
5. Add 1/2 cup blood meal, 1/2 cup bone meal, and 1/2 cup bat guano per cubic foot, then fold the pile over three times with a shovel.
6. Add 1/4 cup kelp meal and 1/4 cup alfalfa meal per cubic foot for trace hormones and slow nitrogen.
7. Add 1/4 cup dolomite lime, 1/4 cup rock phosphate, and 1/4 cup azomite per cubic foot, then mix until no powder clumps remain.
8. Add 1 tablespoon Epsom salt per cubic foot and blend it through the pile.
9. Water the pile with 1 gallon of water mixed with 1 tablespoon unsulfured molasses, stopping when a squeezed handful holds its shape and releases no drips.
10. Cover the pile with the tarp or seal the tote, and store it between 65 and 80 degrees Fahrenheit.
11. Turn the pile every 7 days and re-moisten if the center feels dry.
12. Cook for 21 to 30 days, then check pH; it should read 6.3 to 6.8 and the mix should smell earthy rather than sour or like ammonia.

Building Fresh Super Soil

Start with 1 cubic foot of base mix made of one part peat or coco, one part aeration such as perlite or pumice, and one part compost. Add the same amendment quantities listed above, moisten to field capacity, and cook for a full 30 days. Fresh mixes run hotter than re-amended ones because the compost is still biologically active, so give them the longer cure.

Using the Amended Soil

Fill the bottom third of the pot with amended super soil and cap the top two-thirds with plain base soil. Roots reach the rich layer after the plant has established, which limits the chance of seedling burn. Water with plain pH-adjusted water for the first two weeks after transplant.

Top-Dressing Mid-Cycle

If plants pale in week 4 or 5 of flower, scratch 1/4 cup worm castings and 1 tablespoon bat guano into the top inch of soil, then water it in. Repeat no more than once every 14 days. Stop top-dressing by week 6 so the plant finishes on stored reserves.

When Not to Re-Amend

Skip re-amendment if the spent soil smells sour, shows white salt crust, or came from plants that hermied or had root rot. Those batches carry pathogens and salt buildup that cooking will not fix. Compost them or use them outdoors on ornamentals instead.
