No strain name guarantees a big terpene number. Terpenes are a batch measurement, and the same cut grown by two people can test at 1.3% for one and 3.4% for the other. What counts as high
Most dried flower tests somewhere between 1% and 2.5% total terpenes by weight. Anything at 3% or above sits in the top tier. A 4% jar exists, but it is rare enough that I want to see the lab name and the test date before I trust it. Those numbers come off a gas chromatograph, and they move around depending on the lab, the sample pulled, and how the flower was handled on the way to the bench.

Terpinolene forward
Jack Herer, Durban Poison, Super Lemon Haze, Trainwreck and Amnesia Haze lean on terpinolene, which reads as fresh herbal, pine and citrus peel. These lines often test high on total terpenes because terpinolene shows up alongside limonene and pinene in the same flower rather than replacing them.
Myrcene forward
Blue Dream, Granddaddy Purple, OG Kush and Bubba Kush carry myrcene as the dominant note. Expect earthy, musky, slightly sweet. Myrcene-heavy flower tends to feel heavier in the jar and holds its aroma well through a normal cure.
Caryophyllene and the chem lines
GMO Cookies, Chemdog, Motorbreath and Gorilla Glue #4 are built around caryophyllene plus limonene. Peppery, diesel, garlic, rubber. These are the cultivars that most often crack the 3% mark in published lab roundups, and they are also the ones that hold up worst to sloppy handling, so buy from someone who stores flower properly.
Limonene and citrus
Tangie, Lemon Skunk, Zkittlez and Wedding Cake push limonene to the front. Bright, sweet, orange rind. Limonene is volatile, so a citrus strain bought at a good number can still smell thin a month later if it sat in a warm display case.
Reading a terpene label
A useful label tells you more than the top three terpenes. I look for:
- Total terpenes as a percentage of dry weight, not just milligrams per package.
- The individual terpene breakdown, so I can tell whether the total is spread across five compounds or carried by one.
- Harvest date and packaging date, which matter more than the test date.
- The lab that ran the panel, so I can compare numbers across products.
- Whether the flower was stored with humidity control, since a dry jar loses aroma fast.
Keeping terpenes intact at home
Move flower into a glass jar with a tight lid as soon as you get it home. Keep it cool, dark and steady, around 58% to 62% relative humidity. Do not grind until you are ready to use it, and do not leave a jar in a car or on a windowsill. Terpenes are the first thing to go when temperature swings, and once they are gone, the flower does not get them back.
Bottom line
Chase the number, not the name. GMO Cookies and Super Lemon Haze are good places to start, but the jar in front of you with a 3.1% total and a recent package date beats a famous label that has been sitting on the shelf since last season.
