What animal studies show
A 2002 study in Phytomedicine tested myrcene in mice. Myrcene increased pentobarbital-induced sleep time and reduced motor activity. The doses were high relative to body weight. Related mouse work reports similar results with lemongrass oil, which is myrcene rich.
These are sedative interactions, not sleep quality measurements. The studies do not measure sleep architecture, sleep latency, or next-day function. Mouse results do not establish a human dose.
The cannabis couch-lock claim
Retail cannabis marketing ties myrcene to sedating indica effects. Chemotype analyses of cannabis flower find wide variation in terpene content between batches and between products with the same label. Indica and sativa labels do not predict myrcene level or effect. A high-myrcene flower and a low-myrcene flower can carry the same label.
Myrcene may contribute to effects alongside THC, CBD, and other terpenes. The entourage effect is a proposed mechanism. It is not confirmed for sleep.
