The short answer
Myrcene does not switch THC on or off. It seems to change the character of the high, pushing things toward calm, heavy, and body-focused. It may also slow THC clearance a little by occupying liver enzymes that break THC down. Nearly all of that evidence comes from rodent and lab work. There is still no human trial that nails down a dose-response relationship between the two.

Myrcene is a monoterpene, one of the small volatile molecules that give plants their smell. It shows up in hops, lemongrass, bay leaf, thyme, verbena, and mango. In cannabis it is often the single most abundant terpene, sometimes a third or more of the total terpene profile. Where the "myrcene boosts THC" idea comes from
Mostly from animal studies done in the 1980s and 1990s. Researchers gave mice large doses of myrcene and saw sedation and motor impairment. In some experiments naloxone blocked the effect, which pointed toward opioid pathways rather than cannabinoid ones. That finding is where the whole couch-lock terpene reputation started.
One detail gets dropped every time this study is cited. The doses were enormous, often measured in hundreds of milligrams per kilogram of body weight. A person smoking or vaping a joint takes in a small fraction of a milligram of myrcene. The gap between those two numbers is the entire argument.
The mango myth
You have probably heard that eating a mango before you smoke intensifies the high. The logic runs like this: mango contains myrcene, myrcene loosens the blood-brain barrier, so more THC crosses over and hits harder.
Mango does contain myrcene, but in tiny amounts, and digestion releases it slowly over an hour or more. The blood-brain barrier claim traces back to a single animal study that gets quoted far beyond what it showed. If you enjoy eating mango, eat the mango. Just do not expect a different high.
Enzymes: the more believable mechanism
THC is metabolized mainly by CYP2C9, CYP3A4, and CYP2C19 in the liver. Several terpenes, myrcene included, inhibit CYP450 enzymes in lab dishes. If that same inhibition happened in a living person at realistic doses, THC would stick around longer and the tail end of the high would stretch out.
The catch is concentration. The myrcene levels used in those in vitro experiments run well above what shows up in blood after smoking or vaping. Plausible mechanism, unproven in humans.
Entourage effect: reasonable, understudied
The entourage effect is the idea that cannabinoids and terpenes work together, producing effects that neither creates alone. Myrcene brings its own pharmacology to that mix. It acts on TRPV1 receptors, shows anti-inflammatory activity in some models, and produces anxiolytic-like effects in rodents. THC brings partial CB1 and CB2 activity plus a well-known edge of anxiety at higher doses.
Stack those together and a smoother, less jittery experience is easy to imagine. Review articles on the entourage effect tend to land in the same place: biologically credible, human data thin. I treat it as a working hypothesis, not a settled fact.
What this means when you pick a strain
- High myrcene plus THC usually lands as heavy, sleepy, and body-forward. That profile suits evenings and wind-down routines.
- Two flowers at the same THC percentage can feel completely different when myrcene content differs. Shopping by THC number alone leaves out useful information.
- Myrcene will not shield you from an uncomfortable THC experience. If you are sensitive, start low and go slow regardless of the terpene label.
- Terpene testing is inconsistent across labs, and many labels report only the top few. A full certificate of analysis is the only number worth trusting.
Bottom line
Myrcene most likely tints THC's effects and may slow its breakdown a bit. It is not a potency multiplier you can bank on, and there is no human research confirming that it makes THC stronger. For now, treat it as one dial among several, useful for predicting whether a flower will feel energizing or heavy, and honest about the fact that the science is still catching up.
