How I compare delivery options
Four things decide whether a delivery service is worth handing your address to.

- License type. A delivery-only license, a storefront with delivery authorized, or a microbusiness with a delivery arm. Any of the three works. An unlicensed operator does not.
- Radius, minimums and fees. Most shops publish the ZIP codes they cover, the order minimum, and whether the fee is flat or percentage based. A $30 minimum with a $5 fee beats free delivery on a $75 minimum when all you want is one pre-roll.
- Payment and ID. Cash is still common. Debit-as-cash machines show up more now. Every driver scans a government ID at the door, no exceptions, even if you look twice your age.
- Menu depth and freshness. Delivery menus get picked over. If a shop shows three flower strains and nothing else, you are probably reading an old listing.
Option 1: Storefront dispensaries with their own delivery fleet
This is the group I use most. The menu matches what sits on the shelf that day, the driver carries the shop's paperwork, and if something is wrong you can walk in later and talk to a manager. Search cost is low. Filter for delivery on a marketplace, then confirm the listing shows a license number and a local street address. Expect two to four hour windows, or scheduled slots in busy metro areas like Los Angeles, the Bay Area, Detroit, Boston, Chicago, Phoenix and Las Vegas.

Option 2: Delivery-only licensees and microbusinesses
Some states license businesses that never open a storefront. Massachusetts issues delivery operator licenses, and those companies buy wholesale and bring it straight to you. Smaller menus, often sharper pricing on house picks, and in my experience more flexible scheduling. The tradeoff is inventory risk. If they sell out of the one thing you wanted, you may be building the order again from scratch. Michigan licenses delivery entities too, and some cover a lot of ground well beyond the city limits.
Option 3: Marketplaces that list licensed drivers
Weedmaps and Leafly both let you filter by delivery, which is the fastest way to see who can reach your address tonight. The listing is only as good as the data behind it. Treat the marketplace as a phone book, not a guarantee. Confirm the dispensary name and license before you read a card number over the phone, and be suspicious of any menu with no shop name attached to it.
Red flags I skip
- No license number anywhere on the page or the receipt.
- Payment by gift card, peer-to-peer app or crypto only.
- A promise to deliver anywhere in the state, with no local license behind it.
- Prices far below every neighboring shop. That gap usually means untested gray-market product.
- A driver who does not scan your ID.
What the delivery itself looks like
You order, pay a minimum plus a delivery fee, get a text with a window, and meet the driver outside. Bring your ID, stay reachable by phone, and do not expect anyone to leave a bag at the door. If you live in an apartment building, meet them in the lobby. Most states prohibit delivery on public land and require the product to go to the person who placed the order.
Bottom line
Pick a licensed dispensary with delivery authorized in your state before you compare menus. Storefront shops with their own drivers are the safest bet, delivery-only licensees are often fastest for small orders, and marketplaces remain the best tool for finding who covers your ZIP code. Compare fee, minimum and window after you have confirmed the license. That order of operations saves a wasted evening.
