Water Pipes and Bongs Near Me: Buying Guide

Short answer

Search licensed cannabis stores and smoke shops inside a 10 to 15 mile radius. Call the shop before you drive. Ask three questions: do you stock glass water pipes, what ID do you require, and what are your hours. Stock changes by week, so one call saves a trip.

What a "near me" search returns

A map of stores, not a product list. Results mix three store types: licensed cannabis retailers, tobacco shops, and head shops that sell glass. Inventory differs by store type. A cannabis store sells pipes as accessories. A smoke shop may carry more glass and no cannabis at all. Call to confirm the item sits on the shelf today.

Check before you drive

• Age policy. Legal cannabis states set 21 as the minimum age to buy. Many shops card every customer at the door.
• Store license. A licensed cannabis store posts a state license number. Your state cannabis board lists the number.
• Joint size. Ask for 10mm, 14mm, or 18mm. A bowl that does not match the downstem does not fit.
• Payment. Many cannabis stores take cash and debit. Some do not take credit cards.
• Return policy. Glass sales are final at most shops. Ask before you pay.

Parts of a water pipe

A water pipe has five parts. The chamber holds water. The downstem sits in the joint and reaches the water. The bowl holds ground flower. The mouthpiece sits at the top. An ash catcher clips to the joint and catches ash before it reaches the water.

• Joint size: 10mm, 14mm, or 18mm. Match bowl to downstem.
• Joint type: male or female. A male joint fits inside a female bowl.
• Height: 8 to 18 inches for beaker and straight tube shapes.
• Glass thickness: 3mm to 9mm. Thicker glass weighs more and costs more.

Price ranges in US shops

• Silicone pipe: $20 to $45.
• Glass beaker bong, 10 to 12 inches: $40 to $120.
• Glass straight tube with one percolator: $80 to $250.
• Replacement bowl: $10 to $40.
• Ash catcher: $25 to $80.

Cannabis stores add state and local tax on top of the sticker price. Tax rates differ by state. A smoke shop that sells no cannabis may charge less.

At the counter

Bring a photo ID. A state ID or passport works. Staff check the birth date, and some states scan the ID. Ask for padding in the bag. Glass breaks in a backpack without it. Check the joint for cracks before you leave the lot.

Cleaning and storage

1. Pour out the water after each session. Standing water grows film in a day or two.
2. Rinse with warm water and coarse salt. Add 90% isopropyl alcohol for resin.
3. Shake for 30 seconds. Rinse until the water runs clear.
4. Dry on a towel. Store upright in a case.

Change the water before each use. Do not pour boiling water into cold glass. A temperature shock can crack the piece.

Filtration limits

Water cools smoke and traps some tar. It does not remove all harmful compounds. NIDA reports that water pipes do not filter out all toxic substances in cannabis smoke. Some states classify pipes as drug paraphernalia. Check local rules before you carry a piece in public.
