The short answer

To top a cannabis plant, wait until it has four to six sets of true nodes in veg, then snip the main growing tip just above that top node. The two shoots sitting in the leaf axils below take over and the plant spreads out instead of stretching upward. Recovery takes a few days. A photoperiod plant in good health can be topped two or three times during veg, and each successful top doubles the number of main colas you end up with.

Why cutting the tip changes the shape

Cannabis grows from a single dominant tip. That tip makes auxin, a hormone that moves down the stem and keeps the lower nodes quiet. Growers call the effect apical dominance. Remove the tip and the auxin signal falls off. Buds that were sitting dormant at the nodes below wake up and push shoots out to the sides. That is the whole trick, and it is the reason a topped plant ends up wider instead of taller.

When to top

Timing matters more than technique. A plant that is still building its root system will stall if you take its growth tip too soon.

• Nodes: four to six sets of true leaves. The first round leaves do not count.
• Health: no pests, no nutrient burn, no transplant shock in the last week.
• Stage: veg, not flower. Once buds set, the plant has stopped building new structure.
• Buffer: at least one week, ideally two, before you flip to 12/12.

Where to make the cut

Find the newest growth at the top of the plant. Follow the stem down to the node below it and cut about a quarter inch above that node. Leaving a short stub protects the tiny shoots in the leaf axils. Cut too close and you can crush the very growth you were trying to trigger. Sharp scissors or snips, wiped with alcohol between plants, keep the wound clean.

Steps

1. Water the day before. A hydrated plant recovers faster than a dry one.
2. Locate the top node and the two shoots tucked beside the stem.
3. Snip just above the node with one clean cut. Do not saw at it.
4. Leave the plant alone for three to five days. No defoliation, no transplanting, no heavy feeding.
5. Watch for two new shoots to start climbing. That is your confirmation.

Aftercare

Light intensity can stay where it was. The plant just lost leaf surface, so pushing more light at it does not help. Keep temps steady and let the medium dry back as usual. Feeding stays the same for the first few days. If you are running a manifold or mainlining routine, this is the point where you start tying the two new leaders down to spread the canopy.

How many times

One top gives you two tops. Two gives you four. Three gives you eight, assuming every cut takes. Most home growers stop at two or three because the canopy gets crowded and airflow suffers. Fewer, bigger tops usually beat a dozen thin ones under a home light.

When topping backfires

Autoflowers flower on their own schedule, so lost recovery time comes straight out of yield. Topping in the first two weeks of flower does nothing useful. Stacking several stressors in one week, like a top plus a heavy defoliation plus a transplant, can set a plant back two weeks or more. If the plant looks pale or droopy, fix that first and top later.

How to tell it worked

Within a few days the node below the cut swells and two shoots turn upward. From there the plant grows wider at each node instead of racing for the ceiling. That is the shape you want going into flower.
