THCA Drug Test: Does It Show Up? Cutoffs and Timing

A standard drug test does not look for THCA. Urine, blood, saliva, and hair panels test for THC-COOH, the metabolite the body makes from delta-9 THC. THCA turns into delta-9 THC when it is heated. A person who smokes or vapes a THCA product takes in delta-9 THC and can test positive.

What Drug Tests Measure

Most screens are immunoassays. They bind to 11-nor-9-carboxy-THC, called THC-COOH. That compound forms after delta-9 THC passes through the liver. THCA is a different molecule. It does not trigger the antibody in a standard THC immunoassay at normal concentrations.

A screening result above the cutoff goes to a second test. Gas chromatography-mass spectrometry or liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry confirms the result. A screen alone is not a confirmed positive.

Cutoff Levels

Heat Converts THCA to THC

THCA decarboxylates at about 220 F (105 C). Smoking, vaping, dabbing, and baking all reach that point. The molecular weight ratio is 0.877. One gram of THCA yields about 877 mg of delta-9 THC at full conversion.

Raw THCA taken by mouth converts at a low rate. Data on oral THCA and THC-COOH production is limited. No published study gives a fixed conversion number for humans.

Product Labels

Federal law caps delta-9 THC in hemp at 0.3% on a dry weight basis. THCA is not part of that federal number. Some states count total THC as delta-9 THC plus 0.877 times THCA. Flower labeled 25% THCA can produce more than 20% delta-9 THC after heating.

• Ibuprofen and naproxen
• Efavirenz
• Omeprazole

These compounds cross-react with some immunoassays. Confirmatory testing separates them from THC-COOH.

Limits

No standard panel reports THCA by name. Specialized blood tests can measure the parent compound. Those tests are not used in workplace screening. Results depend on the panel, the cutoff, and the lab.
