Where THC comes from in the plant
Raw cannabis doesn't hold much active THC. It holds THCA, the acidic version, which has no intoxicating effect on its own. Heat changes that. Smoking, vaping, baking, or decarboxylating flower in an oven strips a carboxyl group off THCA and turns it into THC. This is why eating a raw bud does nothing, and why a batch of homemade edibles can land far stronger than intended if the temperature climbed higher than planned.

How THC works in the body
Your body runs an endocannabinoid system, a network of receptors, enzymes, and signaling lipids involved in appetite, sleep, mood, immune function, and pain. Two receptors matter here. CB1 sits mostly in the brain and central nervous system. CB2 sits mostly on immune cells.

THC is a partial agonist at both. It binds CB1 and activates it, just not as fully as the body's own anandamide. That partial activation is why THC produces a broad, messy range of effects instead of one clean outcome. Heavy daily intake is also tied to cannabinoid hyperemesis syndrome, a pattern of severe cyclical vomiting that hot showers ease for a while. It's uncommon but real.
I think of THC as dose-sensitive, not "safe because it's natural." Start low, with edibles in particular, and give it a full two hours before redosing.
Legal status in the US
At the federal level, THC is a Schedule I controlled substance under the Controlled Substances Act, which places it in the same category as heroin and LSD for federal purposes. States have gone their own direction. Many allow medical use, and a growing number allow adult recreational use. Hemp-derived delta-9 THC at or below 0.3 percent dry weight is treated differently under federal law. That patchwork means the rules where you live are what matter at the register.
