Inputs most calculators ask for

• Total THC percentage of the extract or flower. Example: 20% THC.
• Total weight or volume of the product. Example: 3.5 grams (3,500 mg).
• Number of servings or pieces. Example: 10 brownies.

Some calculators ask for decarboxylation efficiency. Raw flower contains THCA, not THC. Heat converts THCA to THC. Most calculators assume full conversion. That assumption is not exact.

The formula

Milligrams of THC = (THC percentage as a decimal) × (weight in mg). Then divide by servings.

Example: 3.5 g of flower at 20% THC. 3,500 mg × 0.20 = 700 mg THC. Divide by 10 servings = 70 mg per brownie.

Example: 1 g of distillate at 90% THC. 1,000 mg × 0.90 = 900 mg THC. Divide by 30 gummies = 30 mg per gummy.

Why the result is an estimate

• THC percentage on a label is an average. One bud or one batch can differ.
• Decarboxylation is not 100% complete in home kitchens.
• Infusion loses THC to filters, pans, and oil that stays in the plant material.
• Your body absorbs edibles at a different rate than another person.

Starting dose references

Colorado law limits retail edibles to 10 mg THC per serving and 100 mg per package. That 10 mg serving is a common starting point for new users. The CDC states that a low dose for a new user is 1 mg to 2.5 mg THC. Wait at least 2 hours before taking more. Edible effects can take 30 to 60 minutes to start and can last 4 to 6 hours.

How to read a label without a calculator

Look for “THC per serving” and “servings per package.” If the label says 5 mg per piece and 20 pieces, then each piece is 5 mg. A calculator is not needed. When the label only gives total THC, divide by the number of pieces.

Limits of calculators

No calculator knows your tolerance, liver function, or recent food intake. A calculator gives a number based on the inputs. It does not give medical advice. Check your state’s limits. Store edibles away from children and pets.
