Why the pedigree is fuzzy
Cannabis breeding records from the early 1990s were not kept like agricultural pedigrees. Growers traded clones by hand, renamed things to protect sources, and passed stories along with the plants. Chemdawg itself reportedly came from bag seed at a Grateful Dead show in 1991, which means the foundation of the whole family started as an accident with no paperwork. This is the version most strain databases and seed banks publish. Chemdawg 91 supplies the sharp chem-fuel bite and the heady, immediate onset. Super Skunk adds structure, a faster finish, and a skunky back end that shows up when the cure goes well. Cross the two and you get something that smells like a gas station and a pine forest at the same time, which is exactly what a good Sour Diesel does.
The DNL theory
A second camp points to Chemdawg 91 crossed with DNL, a Northern Lights and Skunk mashup. This shows up most often in older grower accounts and in the Reservoir Seeds work that preserved one version of the line. DNL would explain the narrower leaves and the slightly sweeter citrus note some cuts carry. Honestly, both stories could be true of different plants that got the same name.

That fuel aroma comes from a terpene blend, not a marketing decision. Myrcene, limonene, caryophyllene, and pinene show up in most lab reports, with some cuts testing high for terpinolene. Limonene and pinene drive the citrus and pine, caryophyllene adds the peppery edge, and myrcene rounds it off. The gasoline character is harder to pin to one compound, which is part of why imitators struggle to copy it.

How it grows
Expect a tall, stretchy plant that triples in height during the flip if you let it. Flowering runs 10 to 11 weeks, longer than most commercial hybrids. Buds are long, foxtail, and pale green with orange pistils, and they need support late in flower because the stems cannot hold the weight. Yields land in the moderate range. The dense colas make it a poor choice for humid, wet climates, since botrytis finds those tight buds fast.
What I check before buying
Start with the nose. A real cut hits with fuel and citrus before you get close, and the skunk note sits underneath rather than on top. Look at the trim, since leafy, rushed flower usually signals a rushed cure too. Squeeze a bud lightly. It should feel springy, not brittle or damp. Then ask what cut it is. A shop that can name the source is a shop that knows its inventory. If the answer is just a shrug and a label, treat the purchase as a hybrid, not as Sour Diesel.
