OG Kush Strain Origin: Where It Really Came From

OG Kush originated in Florida in the early 1990s, sprouted from a bag seed of a local strain called Crippy, and reached Los Angeles around 1996 where a grower named Josh D made it famous. The most repeated lineage is Chemdawg crossed with a Hindu Kush and Lemon Thai hybrid. No breeder has produced verified records, so the true origin sits somewhere between documented history and cannabis folklore.

What does the "OG" in OG Kush mean?

Two explanations dominate. One says OG stands for Original Gangster, a nod to the strain's status as an original California classic. The other says it means Ocean Grown, referencing the coastal California climate where it was cultivated.

OG Kush Strain Near Me: How to Find It at a Licensed Shop

Most cannabis historians lean toward Original Gangster, a phrase popular in Los Angeles hip hop and cannabis circles in the late 1990s. The Ocean Grown theory picked up steam later, largely as a marketing backronym.

OG Kush Strain Genetics: A Buyer's Guide

Who brought OG Kush to Los Angeles?

The grower known as Josh D, also called Josh Del Rosso, is widely credited with carrying the Florida cut to Los Angeles in 1996. He shared clones through his network, and the strain spread through Southern California dispensaries.

A separate account credits Matt "Bubba" Berger with the same Florida genetics, which later produced Bubba Kush. Both stories share the same starting point: a Florida bag seed and a small group of growers.

What genetics make up OG Kush?

The leading theory describes OG Kush as a three-way cross of Chemdawg, a Hindu Kush from Amsterdam, and Lemon Thai. Major strain databases repeat this lineage because it matches the plant's structure, aroma, and effects.

Others argue OG Kush is a Florida Kush selection with no Chemdawg parent at all. Without verified breeding logs from the 1990s, neither claim can be proven.

Why is the origin of OG Kush still disputed?

Cannabis was illegal in the United States throughout the 1990s, so growers kept no formal records and often used aliases. Clones passed hand to hand, and names changed with each crew that grew them.

Oral history also competes with itself. Multiple growers claim the original cut, and each claim ties to a different city, year, or parent strain.

Which famous strains descend from OG Kush?

• Girl Scout Cookies, a cross of OG Kush and Durban Poison
• Bubba Kush, tied to the same Florida genetics
• SFV OG, Tahoe OG, and Ghost OG, regional California OG cuts
• Larry OG and Banana OG, later California selections

These descendants pushed OG Kush genetics into nearly every modern hybrid sold on dispensary shelves.

Is OG Kush indica or sativa?

OG Kush is a hybrid, usually described as slightly indica-dominant. THC content typically lands between 20 and 26 percent, with a fuel, pine, and citrus aroma profile.

Effects lean relaxing and heavy for most consumers, which is why it is often chosen for evening use.

Frequently asked questions

Is OG Kush from Florida or California?

Both, in a sense. The genetics came from Florida in the early 1990s, and Los Angeles is where the strain earned its name and fame.

Is OG Kush the same as Kush?

Does the original OG Kush cut still exist?

The original clone is said to survive in California grower circles, though unverified copies are sold under the same name worldwide.
