Medical prices vs. adult-use prices
Medical cannabis and adult-use cannabis come from the same plants. The price at the register does not match. A medical card changes two numbers: the tax rate and the purchase limit. In Illinois, medical patients pay 1% tax on cannabis. Adult-use customers there pay tax based on THC content, up to 25%. The shelf price is identical. The total is not. As of 2024, 38 states plus the District of Columbia run a medical cannabis program, per the National Conference of State Legislatures.
Medical vs Recreational Dispensary Comparison: Pop's Cannabis
Insurance does not cover cannabis in the US. Federal law lists it as a Schedule I drug. That blocks pharmacy sales, insurance billing, and normal business deductions under tax code section 280E. Dispensaries fold those costs into the shelf price. Cash and debit are common at checkout. Card networks and banks hold limits on cannabis transactions.

What sets the shelf price
- Package size. A 3.5 g jar costs more per gram than a 28 g bag from the same grower.
- THC content. A 3.5 g jar at 20% THC holds about 700 mg of THC. At $35, that is $0.05 per mg. At $60 for the same jar, $0.086 per mg.
- State excise tax. Rates range from 0% to more than 35% across states.
- Testing and packaging rules. States with long lab panels and child-resistant rules carry higher compliance costs.
- Distance from the grow. Stores far from cultivation pay more for freight.
How to compare menus near you
- Open your state cannabis license registry. Search the store name there. A store on a map app may hold no license.
- Confirm the store sells medical products. Some stores serve adult-use customers only.
- Ask for the out-the-door price on a fixed order: one 3.5 g jar of flower at a stated THC level.
- Compute cost per mg of THC. That number compares across package sizes and potency.
- Ask about patient discounts, hardship programs, veterans pricing, and bulk tiers.
Pitfalls
- Delivery services that list a phone number and no license. Verify before payment.
- Menus with no update date. Call and confirm stock and price.
- Stores across a state line. Federal law bans transport between states, and a card from one state does not apply in another.
- Tax added at the register. A $35 jar can reach $45 in states with high excise and sales tax.
Card cost math
A medical card costs a doctor visit plus a state fee. Doctor visits run $100 to $250. State fees run $25 to $200 and renew every one or two years. A patient who spends $150 per month and saves 10% in tax recovers a $300 card in about 20 months. Check the tax gap in your state before you pay for a card.
