Cannabis stays a Schedule I drug under federal law. States have passed their own laws that remove state-level penalties for patients who meet specific rules. Those rules create a separate system from adult-use sales, even in states that allow both.

Does a medical card work in another state?
Usually not. Your card is a state document and it carries no weight in a state that did not agree to accept it. A limited number of states do have reciprocity, letting visitors buy from medical dispensaries with an out-of-state card and a matching ID.
Travel rules are simple to state and easy to ignore. Do not bring cannabis products across state lines, even into a state where cannabis is allowed. The trip itself can create federal exposure.
How to get a medical card
The steps are similar across most states, though the order and paperwork change.
- Confirm your state has a medical program and check whether it accepts your condition.
- See a certifying provider. Many states require a physician or nurse practitioner licensed in that state, and some allow telehealth visits.
- Submit the application to the state agency, with ID, proof of residency, and the provider certification.
- Pay the state fee and wait for the card or certificate.
- Renew on time. Cards often run 1 to 2 years, and renewals may need a new provider visit.
Buying at a dispensary
Bring your state card and a matching photo ID. Dispensaries log each sale against your state purchase limit, so a second shop will see what you already bought that period.
