How to Roll a Joint

A joint holds ground cannabis in a paper. You need three items: cannabis flower, a grinder, and a rolling paper. A filter is optional but helps. The process takes about 2 minutes.

What You Need

• Cannabis flower: 0.5 g to 1 g
• Grinder or scissors
• Rolling paper: 70 mm size
• Filter: 32 mm length
• Lighter

Grind the Flower

Break the flower into small pieces. A grinder makes pieces 2 mm to 3 mm. Remove stems and seeds. Ground cannabis burns at a steady rate. Do not grind to powder. Powder clogs the paper and pulls through.

Make a Filter

Fold a strip of paper or cardboard into a W shape. Roll it into a cylinder. The filter goes at one end of the rolling paper. The filter keeps flower out of your mouth. It also gives the joint structure.

Roll the Paper

Hold the paper with the glue strip facing up and away from you. Place the filter at the left end. Spread ground flower along the paper. Keep the layer even. Use 0.5 g for a thin joint or 1 g for a thick joint.

Pinch the paper between your thumbs and index fingers. Roll the paper back and forth to shape the flower into a cylinder. Tuck the paper edge closest to you over the flower. Press the flower with your thumbs. Roll the paper forward. The glue strip should face you.

Seal and Shape

Lick the glue strip. Roll the paper closed. Twist the empty paper at the tip. Do not twist the filter end. Hold the joint upright. Tap the filter end on a table to settle the flower. The joint should be firm but not hard. A hard joint draws no air.

Light and Inhale

Hold the joint at a 45 degree angle. Light the tip. Rotate the joint to burn the paper and flower. Draw air in short puffs. The tip should glow orange. Ash forms at the tip. Tap the ash off. Inhale. Hold smoke in your lungs for 2 seconds. Exhale.

Common Mistakes

• Using too much flower: the joint will not draw.
• Grinding to powder: flower falls through the paper.
• Loose roll: the joint burns fast and uneven.
• Wet glue: paper tears.
• No filter: flower pulls into your mouth.
