Short answer
Indica is a plant label. It does not describe a brain pathway. The intoxicating effect comes from delta-9-tetrahydrocannabinol (THC), which binds CB1 receptors in the central nervous system. CB1 receptors cluster in the cerebral cortex, hippocampus, cerebellum, basal ganglia, and amygdala. Activity at these sites changes short-term memory, motor timing, pain signal processing, and mood. A 2015 PLOS ONE genetic study found no clear split between plants labeled indica and sativa. The label on the jar predicts less than the lab report does.

THC and CB1 receptors
THC is a partial agonist at CB1 and CB2. CB1 density is high in the hippocampus, which handles memory formation, and in the cerebellum, which handles balance and timing. Two common effects follow from that: trouble recalling a recent conversation, and a slower response to a moving object. Inhaled THC reaches the brain in 2 to 10 minutes. Peak blood levels arrive at 15 to 30 minutes. Effects last 2 to 4 hours. Oral THC absorbs slower. Onset runs 30 to 90 minutes and effects can last 4 to 8 hours. The body makes its own CB1 ligand, anandamide, which breaks down fast. THC stays longer.

What the indica label means at the store
- Plant shape: short stature, broad leaflets, short flowering time.
- Terpenes: myrcene, linalool, and caryophyllene appear in lab reports.
- THC content: 15% to 25% in most tested flower.
- Market claim: sedating, suited to night use.
Terpenes are aromatic oils. Lab work shows they can act on receptors in a dish. Human trials on terpene-driven sedation are few in number.

CBD changes the picture
CBD binds CB1 with weak affinity. It acts on serotonin 5-HT1A receptors and blocks liver enzymes, including CYP3A4 and CYP2C19. That block can raise blood levels of other drugs. CBD also blunts some THC effects, such as anxiety and heart rate. A product with a 1:1 THC to CBD ratio will feel different from a 20:1 product, even when both jars carry an indica label.
Memory and thinking
Acute THC use slows reaction time and weakens working memory. These effects fade as blood levels drop. Daily heavy use brings tolerance at CB1 receptors, so the same dose does less. Some studies find small attention differences in people who stop after long-term heavy use. Findings differ on how long those last. Data on indica-labeled products alone is thin, because most trials give pure THC or a standard extract.
Dose and limits of the evidence
NIDA reports that THC content in US cannabis rose from about 4% in 1995 to about 15% in 2018. Higher THC means more receptor binding. Few trials compare an indica-labeled product with a sativa-labeled product in the same people. Most lab studies use THC alone, without the terpenes in whole flower. The honest answer on indica effects on the brain: the cannabinoid dose and the ratio drive the result, and the indica name does not.
