1. Lab testing

State-licensed labs test tinctures for six groups of contaminants. A batch report should show results for each.

Labs that hold ISO/IEC 17025 accreditation meet a published standard for test methods. Ask for the lab name and the batch number on the report. A report without a batch number does not apply to the bottle in your hand.

2. Base liquid

Tinctures use alcohol, a carrier oil, or glycerin.

• Alcohol tinctures absorb through the mouth lining in 15 to 45 minutes. Shelf life runs two years or more.
• Oil tinctures, most often MCT from coconut, absorb in 60 to 120 minutes. Shelf life runs 12 to 24 months.
• Glycerin tinctures taste sweet and absorb slower than alcohol.

MCT oil holds more cannabinoids per milliliter than olive oil in most commercial formulas.

3. Label math

Check three numbers: total milligrams in the bottle, bottle volume, and dose per dropper.

A 30 mL bottle with 1000 mg of CBD holds 33 mg per mL. A standard dropper holds about 1 mL. A 15 mL bottle with 300 mg holds 20 mg per mL. Brands that print only "full spectrum" without milligrams give you nothing to work from.

State rules set a tolerance range for labeled cannabinoid content. Colorado and California require potency results to match the label within a set range. Ask the store for the current rule in your state.

4. Five checks before you buy

1. Read the batch lab report. Match the batch number to the package.
2. Confirm the lab name and its accreditation.
3. Find the harvest or manufacture date. Cannabinoids degrade with heat, light, and oxygen.
4. Compare milligrams per dollar across brands on the same shelf.
5. Check the state license number on the package.

5. Storage and shelf life

Keep tinctures at 60 to 70 F, away from direct light. Close the cap after each use. Alcohol tinctures hold potency longer than oil tinctures. A tincture that turns cloudy, smells off, or separates has oxidized. Discard it.

6. What no one can tell you

Brand names change by state. A tincture sold in Oregon may not sell in Florida. There is no federal quality standard for cannabis tinctures, and the FDA does not review them. Hemp-derived CBD sits under different rules than state-licensed cannabis. The FDA has approved one cannabis-derived drug, Epidiolex, for specific seizure disorders. It has not approved CBD as a dietary supplement.

Effects vary by person. Start with 1 to 2 mg of THC, or 5 to 10 mg of CBD, and wait two hours before the next dose. Keep a written log of dose, time, and effect.
