Why glass gets recommended so often
Glass is inert. It does not season the way wood does, and it does not leave the metallic tang you get from a cheap metal bowl. Good borosilicate takes direct flame without cracking, cleans up with isopropyl alcohol and coarse salt, and lets you see buildup before it becomes a problem. Soft glass and "pyrex-style" imports are more likely to develop stress cracks, usually right at the bowl where the heat concentrates. Thick walls and a heavy base are the two things I check first.

- Bowl: the cup at the top. Deeper bowls hold more flower and stretch a session; wide shallow bowls burn more evenly and are easier to corner.
- Carb (shotgun): the small hole on the side. Cover it while you draw, then release it. The rush of air clears the stem so you are not inhaling stale smoke.
- Stem: the air path between bowl and mouth. Longer stems cool the smoke a bit more, which matters if hot hits bother your throat.
- Mouthpiece: flared edges sit better on the lips and chip less often.
- Screen: optional. A glass screen or a stainless screen keeps ash out of your mouth. Metal screens can scratch the inside of the bowl over time.

Hemp wick and a soft flame give you more control than a torch. A torch is overkill for a spoon pipe and it is a common way to crack the bowl on a thin piece.

Spoon pipes run from about three inches to seven or eight. Short ones travel well and hit hotter; long ones are easier on the throat. For daily home use I would rather own one thick four-inch spoon than three thin decorative ones. Color-changing glass and frit work look nice, but they do not change how the pipe functions.

Resin builds up fastest in the stem, not the bowl. When draw resistance climbs, it is time. Drop the pipe in a sealed bag or jar with 91% isopropyl alcohol and a spoonful of coarse salt, shake, and let it sit fifteen to thirty minutes. Rinse with warm water, never boiling. Sudden temperature swings are what crack glass, and a hot pipe set down on a cold counter can do the same thing. Clean it weekly and a five-minute soak is usually enough.

- Skip painted exteriors on the inside of the air path.
