Get the card sorted first

A first-time patient discount only exists if you are actually a patient. That means a current state-issued medical cannabis card or certification, plus a government photo ID with a matching name. Walk in without both and the budtender can only ring you up as a recreational customer, which is a different and usually smaller set of promos. Bring the physical card. Some dispensaries accept a digital version from your state registry, plenty do not, and you do not want to discover that at the register with a line behind you.

What a new patient deal usually looks like

At the stores I have shopped, the offer falls into four shapes: a straight percentage off the first purchase, often somewhere between 10% and 30%; a dollar amount tied to a minimum spend; a buy-one-get-one on one category; or a loyalty point bonus instead of cash off. A few throw in a free pharmacist or nurse consultation, which is worth more than 15% off if you are new to dosing.

Three numbers decide whether the deal is real. How much comes off, what it applies to, and how long you have to use it. Everything else is signage.

Parameters worth checking before you drive over

• Minimum spend. Many offers only trigger at $50, $75, or $100. Ask for the threshold, not just the percentage.
• Category exclusions. Flower, concentrates, edibles, and accessories are often treated differently. Sale items and clearance are usually excluded entirely.
• Stacking rules. New patient discounts rarely combine with daily specials, loyalty points, or veteran, senior, and industry discounts. Assume you pick one.
• Once per patient, not once per visit. Most stores honor it a single time, sometimes per license rather than per chain, so the same brand's second location may not extend it.
• Expiration window. Common limits are 30, 60, or 90 days from your first visit or from card activation. A few stores re-offer it at renewal. Ask.
• How tax lands. The discount comes off the product subtotal, then tax is calculated. Thirty percent off is not thirty percent off your final total, and in states that exempt medical purchases from sales tax the savings look different again.
• Purchase limits. A discount does not raise your state allotment. You still cannot buy more than your rolling limit allows.

Where people lose the discount

• Mentioning it after checkout. Say the words at check-in, before the order is rung up.
• Assuming every location of a chain honors it.
• Assuming online menu prices already reflect it. They almost never do.
• Spending up to hit a minimum. Thirty dollars off $150 is not savings if you would not have spent $150.
• Letting the percentage pick your product. You are a patient. The strain and dose matter more than the promo.

How to ask, in one sentence

Keep it plain: "I'm a first-time patient here. Do you have a new patient discount, and what does it apply to?" Then ask the follow-up in the same breath, which is whether it stacks with anything else. Budtenders answer that honestly when you ask up front and get vague when you ask at the register.

Questions worth a phone call

• What is the minimum purchase, if any?
• Does it exclude flower, concentrates, or accessories?
• Is it one time only, or does it repeat at renewal?
• Does it work at your other locations?
