How often you really need to clean it

Watch the water, not the calendar. Clear water and a thin amber film means you have time. Cloudy water, dark reclaim pooling in the neck, or hits that taste like burnt popcorn mean the rig is overdue. Daily dabbers land on a weekly clean with a water swap each session or two. Weekend users can stretch to two or three weeks, but dried resin is harder to remove than fresh resin.

What you need

• 91% or 99% isopropyl alcohol
• Coarse salt, kosher or rock salt, not fine table salt
• Two zip bags or a lidded container
• Cotton swabs and a pipe cleaner or wooden skewer
• Warm water and a clean towel

Step by step for a glass rig

1. Empty the old water into the trash, not the sink, so reclaim does not clog your drain.
2. Pour in enough alcohol to cover the resin, add a pinch of coarse salt, and plug both openings.
3. Shake for 30 to 60 seconds. The salt scours the glass while the alcohol dissolves the oil.
4. Let it sit 10 minutes if the buildup is old, then shake again.
5. Dump the dirty alcohol into a sealed container for disposal, not down the drain.
6. Rinse with warm water until you cannot smell alcohol. Two or three passes.
7. Swab the joint and downstem with a cotton swab dipped in alcohol.

Quartz bangers and nails

Skip the salt here. It can scratch quartz and cloud the surface. Instead, swab the banger with alcohol while it is warm, not hot, and use a fresh swab for the inside walls. For heavy chazz, a short soak in 99% isopropyl followed by a swab does the job. Clean quartz heats evenly and holds flavor, which is why the banger matters as much as the rig.

What not to do

• Do not pour boiling water into cold glass. Thermal shock cracks even thick borosilicate.
• Do not use bleach, acetone, or oven cleaner. Residue is hard to rinse out and you will inhale it.
• Do not torch a banger to burn off residue. It devitrifies the quartz and ruins the surface.
• Do not shake alcohol near a pilot light, candle, or lighter. The vapor is flammable.

Swap the water every session. Add a reclaim catcher so oil collects before it reaches the rig. Dab at low temperature so you get vapor instead of char. Keep a jar of alcohol and salt under the sink so cleaning is a habit, not a project. Store the alcohol capped and out of reach of kids and pets, since swallowing it is a medical emergency.
