A child who has taken in too much THC usually gets sleepy long before anything looks dramatic. Heavy drowsiness, unsteady walking, vomiting, dilated pupils, and a fast heartbeat are the classic cluster. In serious cases you see slow or shallow breathing, a seizure, or a child you cannot wake. Why edibles drive most of these cases
Most serious pediatric cannabis cases involve an edible. Chocolate, gummies, and baked goods taste like dessert, and a small child's body weight is a fraction of an adult's. One 10 mg adult serving can be a large dose for a 20 pound toddler. Inhaled THC can also affect a child in a smoke-filled room, but the dose is usually smaller and the onset is faster.

Timing matters. Inhaled THC shows up within minutes. Edibles can take 30 minutes to 2 hours, and sometimes 4 hours or more. That lag is exactly why parents wait too long. If you know or suspect a child ate a product, treat the clock as already running.

The signs, from mild to serious
Early and moderate signs
- Heavy sleepiness, hard to keep awake, limp or floppy body
- Stumbling, swaying, trouble sitting up or walking in a straight line
- Slurred speech, or a toddler who suddenly stops talking
- Vomiting, sometimes several rounds
- Dilated pupils and a glassy, unfocused stare
- Fast heartbeat, flushed cheeks, warm skin
- Confusion, not recognizing a parent, staring at nothing
- Agitation or panic instead of calm, which is more common in teens
Emergency signs
- Breathing that is slow, shallow, or irregular
- A seizure, jerking, or sudden stiffening
- Blue or gray lips, face, or fingertips
- No response to shouting, shaking, or a firm rub on the chest bone
- Vomiting while drowsy, with a risk of choking
What to do right now
- Stay with the child. Roll them onto their side if they are vomiting or very drowsy, so the airway stays clear.
- Call Poison Control at 1-800-222-1222, any hour. They take suspected exposure calls even when the child looks fine. Call 911 instead if breathing looks wrong, if there is a seizure, or if the child will not wake.
- Save the packaging and write down the time. The label, how much is left in the bag, and the exposure time all help a clinician decide what care is needed.
- Expect a long observation window. Symptoms can build for hours after the child first seems off. Do not assume the worst passed at hour two.
- Take the product to the ER if you go. Staff can read the dose and the cannabinoid profile much faster.
What not to do
- Do not make the child throw up. It removes little THC and raises the choking risk.
- Do not give coffee, soda, or a cold shower to wake them up.
- Do not leave them alone to sleep it off without calling Poison Control first.
- Do not skip the ER because the child seems calm. Drowsiness is the symptom that sends these kids to intensive care.
What treatment looks like
There is no reversal drug for THC. Care is supportive: monitoring, IV fluids, oxygen, and in severe cases a breathing tube. Most children recover fully within 12 to 24 hours, but a small share need intensive care, and some have had seizures or prolonged sedation. The kids who do worst tend to be the youngest, and the ones whose exposure went unnoticed for hours.

- Lock edibles in a hard case, not a drawer or a zippered bag.
- Keep them in the original child-resistant package so the dose stays readable.
- Count what you have, so you know fast if something is missing.
- Skip the word candy, and never eat an edible in front of young kids.
- Check purses, coat pockets, and car floors after a visit from guests.
