Cheap Cannabis Grow Lights That Work
You can light a 2x2 tent for less than a decent pair of shoes. You cannot do it with the first purple panel that shows up in a search. The lights that hold up are boring: white diodes, honest wattage numbers, a metal heat sink, and a PPFD chart the seller is willing to publish. Everything else on the listing is decoration.

Short version: shop by actual watts pulled from the wall, then by efficiency in micromoles per joule, then by coverage area. If a seller will not give you those three numbers, the light is not a bargain. It is a coin flip with your electricity bill.

Measure the space before you shop
A 2x2 tent in flower wants roughly 250 to 350 micromoles per second of total output. A 3x3 wants 450 to 650. A 4x4 wants 900 or more. Those numbers come from the PPFD a plant needs at canopy level, which for cannabis in flower sits around 600 to 900 µmol/m²/s over a 12 hour day. Multiply it out and you land near 30 to 40 mol/m²/day of daily light integral. That is the target.
How Far Should Cannabis Grow Lights Be From Plants?
Now the useful part. A light that costs $70 and delivers 250 µmol/s beats a $50 light that delivers 150 µmol/s, even though the second one is cheaper. You are buying photons, not plastic.
Parameters worth checking
- Actual wattage. Look for "power draw" or "actual power." A "1000W" panel that draws 105W is a 105W light. That is fine if the price matches. It is theft at $180.
- PPF in µmol/s. This is total light output. Budget listings hide it because the number is embarrassing.
- Efficacy in µmol/J. Divide PPF by actual wattage. Below 1.8 is old tech. Around 2.2 to 2.5 is normal for budget boards. Above 2.7 is current premium.
- PPFD map. A real manufacturer publishes a grid at a stated hang height. No map means no data.
- Driver brand. Mean Well, Sosen, and Inventronics are the names to look for. An unlabeled driver is the first thing to fail.
- Heat sink. Extruded aluminum with fins, not a stamped plate. Cheap lights that run hot lose output within a year.
- Dimming. A knob or screwdriver dimmer lets you run seedlings at 40% and save power.
- Plug and voltage. US buyers want a 120V cord and a UL or ETL listing. Some imports ship with a Euro plug and an adapter.
- Warranty. One year from a US warehouse is workable. "Contact seller" with no address is not.
Under $50: bulbs and shop lights
At this price you are not flowering a big plant. You are starting seeds, rooting clones, keeping a mother alive, or growing lettuce next to the tent. High output LED bulbs in a splitter work better than people admit. Four 15W bulbs at decent efficiency give you roughly 90 to 100 µmol/s, which is plenty for seedlings at 18 inches. A 4 foot LED shop light does the same job for veg and hangs flat.
What to skip: the 30W blurple panels with a fan. They run hot, the spectrum is narrow, and the fans die first.
$60 to $130: the sweet spot
This is where real grow lights start. Look for a 100W board or bar fixture rated 2.3 to 2.7 µmol/J. That lands around 230 to 270 µmol/s, enough to flower one or two plants in a 2x2 and to veg a 3x3. Known budget names in this range include Spider Farmer, Mars Hydro, ViparSpectra, and AC Infinity. Prices move with sales, so check the actual wattage on the spec sheet rather than trusting the model number.
$130 to $220: more coverage, better parts
Here you get 200W to 240W of real draw, dimming, and a driver that will last. Two hundred watts at 2.6 µmol/J is about 520 µmol/s, which covers a 3x3 in flower without strain. This is also the range where one fixture beats two cheap ones: one cord, one heat source, one warranty claim if something goes wrong.
Pitfalls that eat the savings
- Model numbers that are wattage claims. "2000W" on a light that draws 200W is marketing, and the seller knows it.
- No PPFD chart, no spectrum chart, no driver name. Three missing items is a pattern.
- Blurple panels with "double chips." The diodes are old, the heat sink is thin, and output fades after a few runs.
- Used HID and MH setups. Cheap up front, then bulbs, ballast heat, and a bigger exhaust fan.
- Two 50W lights instead of one 100W light. Same money, more cords, worse coverage in the middle.
- Skipping ventilation. A cheap light that runs hot turns a $70 purchase into a $70 purchase plus an AC problem.
Do the math on cost per photon
Take the price, divide by the PPF in µmol/s. A $90 light at 250 µmol/s costs about 36 cents per µmol/s. A $45 light at 120 µmol/s costs about 38 cents. Nearly identical up front, but the first one uses less power for the same yield, so it wins after one grow.
Bottom line
Buy the smallest light that hits your space's PPF target, from a brand that publishes real numbers, and dim it down while the plants are small. That approach beats any single "best cheap grow light" list, because your tent size, your budget, and your electricity rate are not mine.
