Caryophyllene Effects on the Body: Research Guide

Beta-caryophyllene (BCP) is a sesquiterpene found in black pepper, cloves, cinnamon, hops, copaiba oil, and cannabis. It binds the CB2 receptor. It does not cause a THC-type high because it has little activity at CB1. Most evidence comes from cell and animal studies. Human trials are few and small.

Formula C15H24. Molecular weight 204.35 g/mol. It is a 15-carbon molecule, heavier than monoterpenes such as myrcene and limonene. That weight affects how it behaves when heated.

Concentration in plants varies. Black pepper oil can run 25% or more by weight. Clove oil holds a similar share. Copaiba oil from South America can exceed 50% in some samples. How it acts in the body

BCP is a CB2 agonist in lab models. CB2 receptors sit on immune cells. Activation links to lower release of TNF-alpha, IL-1beta, and IL-6.

Some papers report activity at PPAR receptors, which relate to fat and glucose handling. That mechanism is not settled.

Oral absorption is low. The molecule is fat soluble. Some animal data show it can reach brain tissue. Human pharmacokinetics are not well mapped.

Food use is small. BCP is FEMA GRAS No. 2252 and FDA-listed as a flavoring substance. Published boiling points differ: about 119 C (246 F) in cannabis terpene charts, and about 262 C (504 F) at standard pressure in chemistry references. The lower figure reflects reduced pressure. Vape temperature charts that repeat one number are incomplete.

Safety and limits

Food-level intake has a long record. High-dose supplements are not the same thing. Lab work suggests BCP can interact with some CYP enzymes, which handle drug breakdown. Human relevance is unknown. Talk to a clinician before combining a BCP supplement with prescription drugs. Skip it in pregnancy and breastfeeding without medical advice, because data are lacking.
