What temperature should you dab at?

Shoot for 450°F to 600°F. That is the band where concentrate turns to vapor fast without scorching. If you only remember one number, use 550°F. Low enough to keep the terpenes, hot enough to actually deliver the hit.

• 450-550°F (low temp): Best flavor. Vapor is thin, the hit is smooth, and you taste the strain instead of the heat. Sip it slow and carb cap hard.
• 550-650°F (medium): The all-rounder. Decent flavor, thicker clouds, faster extraction. Most e-rig presets land here.
• 650-720°F (high): Big clouds, muted taste, more throat sting. Some people like it for high-tolerance evenings.
• Above 750°F: Nothing good happens. The oil degrades into harsher compounds and you burn off terpenes you paid for.

Why dab temps sit above the boiling points

Every compound in your jar has a boiling point, and most of them are low. Pinene boils around 311°F, THC around 315°F, myrcene around 334°F, limonene around 349°F, CBD somewhere in the 320-356°F range, and linalool around 388°F. By that math a 350°F nail should do the job. It does not, because you are dropping a small amount onto a surface that cools the second it touches oil. The extra heat compensates for a short, uneven contact window.

THCA and why some dabs feel weak at low temp

THCA becomes THC through decarboxylation. In flower that is a slow oven process. On a hot banger it happens in seconds, which is one reason a dab hits so fast. Drop THCA-heavy diamonds on a 450°F surface and the conversion is partial, so the effects feel lighter and more heady. Run the same material at 600°F and you get fuller conversion and a heavier body load.

Finding your number

1. Start at 550°F and take one normal-size dab.
2. If it is harsh or the oil chars black, drop 25-50°F.
3. If the puddle stays big and gold, add 25-50°F.
4. Note the material. Rosin and live resin reward low temps. Distillate and older shatter tolerate heat better.

Tools change the reading

A banger's surface temp and the air temp above it are different numbers. Quartz holds heat longer than titanium, which means a lower starting point with a longer window. Ceramic sits in between. With an e-rig, the dial number is a target, not a measurement, so calibrate against how the dab actually tastes. An infrared thermometer on a quartz banger tells you more than a stopwatch once you know your setup.

Whatever temp you settle on, the concentrate matters as much as the heat. Fresh, properly stored, lab-tested product from a licensed shop will taste cleaner at any setting than old oil that has been sitting warm in a drawer.
