Does TSA actively search for marijuana?
TSA states its officers do not search for marijuana or other illegal drugs. Their job is to keep weapons, explosives, and other prohibited items off aircraft.
Even so, a routine bag search for something else, like a lithium battery or an oversized liquid, is enough for cannabis to surface. Flower, vape cartridges, edibles, and concentrates all show up on X-ray or in a hand search.
What happens if TSA finds cannabis in your bag?
- A screening officer spots the item or a bag alarm triggers, and the bag is pulled for inspection.
- The officer confirms what the item is and calls a law enforcement officer, usually local or airport police.
- The outcome depends on the airport and the jurisdiction: a warning, a citation, confiscation, or an arrest.
TSA itself does not arrest you. The responding law enforcement agency decides what happens next, based on the state where the airport sits.
Can you fly with weed between two legal states?
No. Air travel crosses federal airspace, which federal law governs, so a flight from one legal state to another does not make possession legal.

Are there disposal options before security?
Yes. Several airports in legal states, including airports in Colorado, Nevada, and California, provide amnesty boxes where travelers can drop cannabis before the checkpoint. Use one before screening rather than risk a referral.
What is the safest approach for travelers?
Leave cannabis at home. If you want it at your destination, buy from a licensed retailer after you arrive instead of carrying it through a checkpoint or across state lines.
