What Trichome Stages Mean

Trichome stages describe the color and maturity of the resin glands on cannabis flowers. These glands sit on the surface of the calyxes and hold most of the cannabinoids and terpenes the plant produces. The color shift is the clearest visual signal for harvest timing. Clear trichomes are immature. Cloudy, sometimes called milky, trichomes mark the transition into peak potency. Amber trichomes show that THC is starting to break down. The Three Main Trichome Stages

Stage 1: Clear

Clear trichome heads look like tiny glass beads. The plant is still building cannabinoids, so potency is low at this point. A few clear trichomes are normal even late in flower, and new growth keeps appearing on the top of the plant. A fully clear field of trichomes means the plant is not ready.

Stage 2: Cloudy (Milky)

Cloudy trichomes lose their transparency and take on a white, opaque look. This is the stage tied to the highest concentration of THC in its acidic form, THCA. A full field of cloudy heads with almost no clear ones is the point most growers target for a head high.

Stage 3: Amber

Amber trichomes turn gold, brown, or tan as THC oxidizes into cannabinol (CBN). More amber means a heavier, more sedating effect. A plant at 70 percent cloudy and 30 percent amber sits in a balanced middle ground.

How to Inspect Trichomes

1. Pick a bud on a mid-level branch, not the top of the main cola and not a lower larf bud.
2. Grab a 30x to 60x jeweler's loupe or a clip-on phone microscope.
3. Steady the branch with one hand so the bud does not move under the lens.
4. Shine a small flashlight from the side instead of straight on, since direct light washes out the color.
5. Look at the trichomes growing on the calyxes, the small teardrop pods where seeds would form.
6. Ignore the trichomes on sugar leaves, because they mature earlier and will read amber before the buds do.
7. Count roughly how many heads are clear, cloudy, and amber in the field of view.
8. Repeat the check on at least three separate buds across the plant.
9. Write the ratio down and repeat the inspection every one to two days until the mix matches your target.

Choosing a Harvest Ratio

• Mostly cloudy, under 10 percent amber: peak THC, brighter and more energetic effect.
• 70 percent cloudy, 20 to 30 percent amber: balanced potency and body effect.
• 50 percent cloudy, 50 percent amber: heavier body effect with higher CBN.
• Mostly clear with amber tips: wait, the plant is still building potency.

What Changes the Timeline

• Genetics decide the baseline flower time, and some cultivars finish two weeks apart under the same lights.
• Light intensity and daily light integral move maturity faster in high output rooms.
• Cooler late-flower temperatures slow the amber shift, while heat speeds it up.
• Trichome color develops unevenly from top colas down, so check each zone separately.

Common Mistakes

• Judging by pistils alone, since hair color and trichome color do not track together.
• Checking only the top cola and harvesting the whole plant too early.
• Using too little magnification, which makes cloudy and clear heads look the same.
• Harvesting on a fixed calendar date instead of on the plant's actual condition.

A quick rule: cloudy heads mean potency, amber heads mean degradation, and clear heads mean wait. Sample more than one bud, look at the calyxes, and trust the ratio over any label timeline.
