Cannabis Topping Guide: How & When to Top Weed

Short answer

Topping means cutting off the top growing tip of a cannabis plant so the shoots sitting just below it take over as new leaders. You do it once during veg, straight above a node, usually above the fifth or sixth set of leaves. The plant pauses vertical growth for a few days, then starts pushing sideways. That is the entire trick.

Why topping pays off

Cannabis leans on apical dominance. The tallest point collects most of the auxin and most of the light, so everything below it stays small and shaded. Snip that point and the hormones redistribute to the next shoots down the stem. Those two turn into colas instead of popcorn. In my own runs, a topped plant in a four foot tent fills the screen faster and finishes with more even bud sites than one I left alone.

The window matters more than the technique. A plant topped too early spends recovery energy it does not have, and one topped in flower just loses a bud.

Timing checklist

• Wait for 4 to 6 healthy nodes, roughly 3 to 4 weeks from sprout.
• Confirm the plant is actively growing. No drooping, no transplant shock, no pests.
• Top in veg only, ideally 2 weeks before you flip to 12/12 so the canopy has time to even out.
• Give root space and food. A hungry plant recovers slowly.
• Skip it on autoflowers and on any seedling that looks thin or pale.

How to do it

1. Wipe your scissors or snips with alcohol. Dull or dirty blades crush stems and invite rot.
2. Find the newest node, the point where the top two shoots meet the main stem.
3. Cut about a quarter inch above that node, taking the small tip above it. Do not leave a long stub. It dies back and can rot.
4. Leave the two shoots below intact. They are your new mains.
5. Keep light and airflow normal. No need to change anything else.

The cut heals in 24 to 48 hours. New growth usually shows at the two remaining shoots within 3 to 5 days.

What to expect afterward

The stem thickens at the cut and forms a small knuckle. Height growth stalls briefly, then resumes on two fronts. If you only top once you get two colas. Top the two new shoots later and you get four. Each round doubles the tops but adds recovery time, so most home growers stop at two or three rounds.

Common mistakes

• Topping a plant that has only 2 or 3 nodes. Too small to bounce back.
• Cutting too far above the node. The leftover stub just dies.
• Topping in early flower. You trade a potential top cola for nothing.
• Topping multiple times in the same week. Let each cut heal first.
• Topping autos. Their clock is fixed, and stress stalls them for real.

Topping versus FIM and LST

FIM is a partial cut that often leaves 3 or 4 tops instead of 2. It is less predictable but less stressful. LST is bending and tying, no cutting at all, which spreads the canopy without any recovery period. Plenty of growers combine all three. I top once for structure, then use LST to keep everything level under the light.

One clean cut above the fifth or sixth node is the highest return move in a veg tent. Do it early, do it once, keep the plant fed, and let the two new leaders carry the canopy from there.
