Cannabis Subscription Box Gift: Rules, Costs, Shipping

The short answer

A cannabis subscription box is a set of cannabis or hemp products shipped on a schedule. A gift subscription pays for a fixed number of shipments for another person. The buyer pays. The recipient must meet the age rule in the state where the box arrives. THC boxes ship inside one state through licensed sellers. Hemp boxes can move through the mail when they meet federal limits.

What comes in a box

• Flower, pre-rolls, vape cartridges
• Edibles, gummies, drinks
• Concentrates and hash
• Hemp goods: CBD, delta-8 in some states
• Accessories: papers, grinder, tray, storage jar

Three rules to check before you pay

State license and state lines

As of 2025, 24 states and the District of Columbia license adult-use sales. Medical programs run in most states. Each state sets its own product list, potency cap, and tax. A box bought in one state cannot be mailed to another state when it holds THC cannabis.

Cannabis Subscription Box vs. Buying Retail: Which is Best for You?

Age and ID at the door

Adult-use states set the minimum age at 21. Medical states set other ages for patients. Delivery drivers check a government ID at the door and scan it in many states. If no one 21 or older is home, the order goes back to the store.

Billing and cancellation

FTC guidance for subscription sellers: state the amount and date of each charge, and give a simple way to cancel. Ask for the terms in writing. Save the confirmation email.

Shipping limits

USPS bars cannabis from the mail under 18 U.S.C. 1716 and Publication 52. Licensed sellers use in-state drivers or store pickup. Hemp products may ship if delta-9 THC is 0.3% or less by dry weight under the 2018 Farm Bill. Some states ban delta-8 THC and other intoxicating hemp cannabinoids, so check the state list first.

Cost

Accessory boxes list from $30 to $80. Hemp CBD boxes run $40 to $120 per shipment. Licensed THC boxes run $80 to $250 per shipment before tax and delivery fees. A 3-month gift totals $240 to $750 in states with high tax. Ask for the full total, not the base price.

Other gift options

• Gift card to a licensed dispensary in the recipient's state
• Accessory box: papers, grinder, jar, tray. Ships by mail.
• One-time hemp box with a batch lab report
• Pickup order at a store, paid by the buyer

Questions for the seller

1. What state license do you hold?
2. Which states and ZIP codes do you deliver to?
3. What is the total per shipment, with tax and fees?
4. How does the recipient pause or cancel?
5. What if the recipient is not home for the ID check?
6. Do you publish third-party lab results for each batch?

If a seller cannot answer these, buy a dispensary gift card instead.
