Humidity range

Relative humidity measures water vapor in the air inside the container. Flower holds its own moisture. The container decides how fast that moisture leaves or collects.

• Below 55% RH: trichomes dry and break off. Terpenes evaporate. Flower crumbles.
• 55% to 62% RH: target range. Stems bend instead of snapping.
• Above 65% RH: mold and mildew grow. Botrytis and Aspergillus are the common species.

Water activity

Water activity (aw) differs from RH. It measures free water in plant tissue. ASTM D8197 sets a range of 0.55 to 0.65 aw for dry flower sold for human use. State labs test for it. Above 0.65 aw, bacteria and mold grow.

59°F to 70°F works for home storage. Heat speeds decarboxylation and THC loss. A closet shelf beats a windowsill, a car, or a radiator top. Above 77°F, degradation accelerates.

Container

• Glass jar with a gasket and clamp lid. Mason jars work.
• Amber or opaque glass blocks UV light.
• Two-way humidity packs hold 58% or 62% RH. Replace them every 2 to 4 months.
• Skip plastic bags. They carry static, dry out trichomes, and pass air.

Light and oxygen

UV light converts THC to CBN, a degradation product with sedative effects. Oxygen oxidizes terpenes and cannabinoids. Each time you open a jar, fresh air enters. Open it when you need flower, then seal it.

What not to do

• Fridge: condensation forms each time you open the jar. Cold firms trichomes, which then snap.
• Freezer: ice crystals form on the flower. Thawing adds moisture.
• Orange peel or bread slice: adds moisture and mold spores.
• Silica desiccant: pulls RH below 50% and overdries flower.

Mold check

Look for white fuzz, gray webbing, or an ammonia smell. Discard the flower if you find any. Spores spread through the whole jar. Do not smoke or vape moldy flower.

Home cure timeline

Harvested flower cures for 2 to 4 weeks. Burp jars once a day for the first week, then every 2 to 3 days. After cure, seal and store. Flower keeps 6 to 12 months in good conditions. THC content drops after that.
