How Shatter Is Made

Producers wash cannabis plant material with a hydrocarbon solvent. Most use butane, propane, or a blend of both. The solvent strips cannabinoids and terpenes from the plant. The result is a thick oil.

That oil then goes into a vacuum purge. Heat and vacuum pull leftover solvent out of the extract. The purge time ranges from several hours to a few days. Short purges leave more residual solvent. A long, hot purge drives off terpenes along with the solvent.

State regulators set residual solvent limits for concentrates. Labs test each batch for butane, propane, pesticides, mold, and potency before the product reaches a store shelf.

Shatter vs Other Concentrates

How to Use Shatter

Most people vaporize shatter on a dab rig or in a concentrate pen. A nail or banger runs between 315F and 500F. Above 600F the THC and terpenes break down and the hit turns harsh.

Dosing is the hard part. A gram of shatter at 80% THC holds about 800 mg of THC. A grain of rice sized piece can carry 25 mg to 40 mg. That is several times a standard serving of flower.

Start with a piece the size of a peppercorn. Wait 15 minutes before taking more. Oral use is different. Raw shatter is not active when eaten. It needs decarboxylation first, which means heating it at 240F for 30 to 40 minutes.

Storage

Keep shatter in a cool, dark place at room temperature. Parchment paper or a glass jar works. Silicone containers are common, but some producers report that silicone pulls terpenes out of the extract over months.

Avoid the fridge. Cold shatter collects condensation when the jar warms up, and water in the extract makes the nail sizzle.

Legality and Safety

Shatter is legal in states with medical or adult-use cannabis programs. Federal law still classifies it as a Schedule I substance.

Concentrates carry risks that flower does not. Tolerance builds faster at 80% THC than at 20%. Anxiety, racing heart, and short-term memory loss are reported at high doses. Impaired coordination lasts for hours.

Buy from licensed stores. Lab-tested shatter has a batch number, a potency result, and a solvent report. Unregulated shatter has none of those.
