The short answer
Most cannabis sauce sold in the US tests between 60% and 90% total THC. Some jars land in the 45% to 55% range because they carry a heavy terpene load, and a smaller number of diamond-heavy batches push past 90%. When a label reads 95% or higher, you are usually looking at a mostly cannabinoid fraction with very little sauce left in the jar.

What sauce is
Sauce is the runny half of a separated concentrate. When a producer makes diamonds, THCa crashes out into solid chunks and leaves behind a liquid loaded with terpenes, flavonoids, and whatever cannabinoids did not crystallize. That liquid is the sauce. Some brands jar it alone. Others pack it back with the diamonds as a two-part product, and that combined jar almost always reads higher than the sauce on its own.

Why the numbers swing so much
- Terpene load. Sauce can hit 15% to 30% terpenes by weight. Terpenes are not THC, so every point of terpenes pushes the THC percentage down.
- Starting material. Fresh frozen flower for live resin keeps more terpenes and tends to land lower on THC than cured trim runs.
- Separation time. The longer a jar sits, the more THCa crystallizes out. Skim the sauce late and you get a lower reading. Leave crystals in and the number climbs.
- Lab variance. Two labs can differ by several points on the same sample. Batch-to-batch swings of 10 points are normal, not a red flag.
Reading the label without getting fooled
Look at total THC, not delta-9 THC. Raw concentrate holds most of its THC as THCa, which is not psychoactive until it is heated. Total THC = (THCa × 0.877) + delta-9 THC. A jar labeled 5% delta-9 THC can still be an 80% total THC product. If a menu only lists delta-9, ask for the full COA. The certificate of analysis will show both numbers plus the terpene panel.

I also check the harvest or production date. Terpenes oxidize, and an old jar of sauce can lose aroma while the THC number stays the same on paper. A six-month-old batch often dabs flat compared to a fresh one.
Live sauce versus cured sauce
Live resin sauce starts with fresh frozen plants, so it holds a broader terpene profile. That usually means a slightly lower total THC, often in the 55% to 75% range. Cured resin sauce uses dried material, which loses some volatiles but leaves more room for cannabinoids. Those jars commonly land in the 70% to 85% range. Neither is stronger in effect per milligram of THC. The difference is flavor and how the high feels around the edges.
Where sauce sits next to other concentrates
- Hash and kief: 20% to 50% THC
- Live resin and budder: 60% to 80% THC
- Sauce: 60% to 90% THC
- Shatter and wax: 70% to 90% THC
- Distillate: 85% to 95% THC, with most terpenes added back
Sauce is not the strongest thing on the shelf by number. Distillate usually wins that race. Sauce wins on terpenes and on the entourage effect that comes with them.
Dosing a 70% jar
A grain of rice sized dab of 70% sauce holds roughly 20 mg of THC. For someone new to concentrates, that is a lot. A sesame seed sized portion, closer to 5 mg, is a saner starting point. Wait 15 minutes before adding more. Sauce is runny, so a cold start dab or a small scoop tool keeps the dose consistent instead of smearing a random amount across the nail.
Storage and handling
Keep sauce sealed, upright, and cool. A fridge works, but let the jar come to room temperature before opening so condensation does not get in. Light and heat degrade terpenes fast. If the sauce separates in the jar, stir it with a metal tool. That is normal and not a sign of a bad batch.
