Cannabis rolling papers: the short answer
Buy unbleached hemp or rice papers in 1 1/4 size and you will be happy most of the time. Thin paper burns cooler and carries more of the flower's flavor. Thicker paper burns slower and hides a sloppy roll. Size is about how much flower you want in one smoke, not about quality. Everything else, bleaching, gum type, branding, matters far less than people claim.

Paper material: what you are smoking besides flower
The fiber decides how the paper tastes, tears, and burns.

- Hemp: Strong and slow-burning, with a mild paper taste. Good for beginners because it holds up while you roll.
- Rice: Very thin and very clean. Ash runs pale and light. Flavor comes through with almost no interference, but these tear if you are rough.
- Flax (linen): The classic European cigarette-paper fiber. Light, low ash, and a crisp, even burn.
- Wood pulp: The cheap stuff. Burns hot and fast, adds a paper flavor, and tends to canoe if the roll is not tight. Fine in a pinch, not something I would buy on purpose.
Bleached or unbleached?
Unbleached papers are the tan ones. Bleached papers are white, and the traditional process used chlorine, which is why so many brands now advertise chlorine-free or natural white papers. In practice, the difference in burn is small. The taste difference shows up more with thin papers, where you can pick up a faint chemical edge. If you are not sure, unbleached is the safe pick.

Paper weight, explained
Weight is usually given in grams per square meter (gsm), and the range runs from roughly 10 to 25. Lower numbers mean thinner paper. Thin papers (10 to 14 gsm) burn fast, taste clean, and are harder to handle. Mid-weight (15 to 18) is the all-rounder. Heavy papers (20 and up) burn slow and forgive a loose roll, but they add a paper taste and can make the last third of a joint feel harsh.
You will also see ultra-thin marketing. That usually means a translucent rice or hemp sheet. Lovely to smoke, a bad place to learn.
Sizes and shapes
- Single wide: Small and square-ish. Holds about 0.3 to 0.5 g. Rare in US shops now.
- 1 1/4: The default. Fits roughly 0.5 to 0.75 g and rolls with an easy tuck.
- King size: Longer, for big joints and sharing. Needs more flower to fill properly.
- Cones: Pre-shaped and pre-gummed, sometimes pre-rolled. Easier to fill evenly and the burn is more consistent than most hand rolls.
Slim, wide, and long versions exist too. Wide papers give you control over a fat roll but need more flower to fill.
The gum line
Gum is gum arabic or a plant-based adhesive. It should be tacky and even, not crusty or peeling at the edge. Cheap papers skimp on gum width, and the seal fails mid-roll. Do not soak it. A quick lick is enough, and too much moisture wrinkles the paper and pops the seam open.
How to pick, depending on what you want
- Most flavor: ultra-thin rice or unbleached hemp, 1 1/4.
- Easiest roll: mid-weight hemp or a pre-rolled cone.
- Longest burn: heavier paper, rolled a little looser than you think.
- Smoothest for beginners: cones, every time.
Two things people get wrong
First, thinner is not automatically better. A paper that is too thin burns hot and can canoe if the flower is not ground evenly. Second, no paper can rescue harsh flower. If a joint is scratchy, look at the material, its moisture level, or a badly ground stem before you blame the paper.
Storing your papers
Paper pulls moisture out of the air. A pack left in a humid room seals badly and burns uneven. Keep the booklet closed and inside something airtight, or in a sealed jar with your flower. If the sheets feel soft and limp, they have picked up moisture, so let them sit somewhere dry for a few hours.
