Short answer: your home state usually doesn't matter
In most adult-use states, the recreational purchase limit is the same for a visitor as it is for someone holding a local driver's license. Colorado, Washington, Oregon, Nevada, Michigan, Massachusetts, New York and Arizona will sell to any customer 21 or older with a valid government ID. The budtender checks your birth date, not your ZIP code.

Illinois is the exception people trip over. Non-residents there are capped at 15 grams of flower, 2.5 grams of concentrate and 250 milligrams of THC in edibles per transaction. Residents get double those numbers. If Chicago is your stop, that gap is your whole trip.

- Per transaction. The most a store can ring up at once. Colorado's rec cap is 1 ounce of flower, 8 grams of concentrate and 800 milligrams of THC in edibles. Washington runs 1 ounce of flower, 7 grams of concentrate, 16 ounces of solid edibles and 72 ounces of liquid edibles. Massachusetts sits at 1 ounce of flower, 5 grams of concentrate and 500 milligrams of edibles.
- Per day. California caps concentrate purchases at 8 grams and flower at 1 ounce per day. Few other states track daily totals at the register, so don't assume you can hit four shops in one afternoon and stay clean anywhere.
- Possession. What you can legally carry on your person or in the car. This is often higher than the per-transaction cap, which is how people end up legal at every register and over the line in their own trunk.
Edibles have their own vocabulary. They're measured in milligrams of THC, not grams, so a 100 mg chocolate bar and a gram of flower are not comparable units. Read the label.
Out-of-state medical cards
Recreational rules cover most visitors, so this only matters if you're buying medicine. A small number of medical states let patients registered elsewhere shop on a foreign card. Arizona and Maine are the usual examples. Florida, Pennsylvania and most other medical-only states do not accept out-of-state cards at all, and no card issued outside the country works. Call the dispensary before you build a trip around it.
Pitfalls that catch visitors
- Photos of an ID, expired licenses, and vertical IDs that were never converted. Bring the physical card.
- Looping. Some shops and some states limit how many times the same customer can buy in a day, and a budtender who recognizes you from an hour ago can decline.
- Buying for a friend waiting in the car. Supplying a minor or reselling without a license is a felony in every legal state, and the cameras are right there.
- Crossing a state line with it. That's a federal offense. Idaho, Wyoming, Utah, Kansas and Nebraska all border legal states and all treat it as a crime.
- Federal land. National parks, forests, monuments and military bases run on federal law no matter which state you're standing in.
- Casinos and hotel rooms. Casino floors are private property and most ban cannabis outright. Smoking in a non-smoking room gets you a cleaning fee and a do-not-return note. Licensed consumption lounges exist in Nevada, Colorado, Illinois, California and New York, but not in every city.
- Flying home with it. TSA's policy is that officers don't search for cannabis but will refer anything they find to local police. That is a statement about screening, not a green light. If your flight lands where it's illegal, the charge is waiting at the other end.
- Canada. A cannabis admission at the border can mean a lifetime ban. Leave it behind.
How I'd plan a trip
- Look up the state's cannabis authority page for the current number. Limits move with each legislative session and blog posts go stale fast.
- Fix your total possession cap for the trip, then work backwards. That number, not the per-transaction cap, is the one that keeps you out of trouble on the drive home.
- Ask about taxes and payment before you reach the register. Excise tax stacks on top of sales tax and can add a third to the sticker price. Plenty of shops still run cash or a cashless ATM with a fee attached.
- Keep everything sealed in the original packaging, in the trunk, out of the driver's reach.
The purchase limit is simple once you know which number applies. Buying in more than one state on the same trip is where people get sloppy. Pick a state, buy your cap, and drive it home without a detour.
