How to Compare Cannabis Prices Across States Without Getting Fooled

The sticker price on a dispensary menu is not the price. In most states you pay excise tax, sales tax, and sometimes a local option tax on top, so a $35 eighth in Oregon and a $35 eighth in Illinois can land very differently at the register. When I compare markets, I skip the shelf price and work backward from one number: dollars per milligram of THC. It is the only figure that travels from state to state.

Step 1: Convert every product to cost per milligram of THC

Flower math is simple. One gram of 20% flower holds roughly 200mg of THC, so a $10 gram runs about 5 cents per milligram. A 100mg edible pack at $18 is 18 cents per milligram. A 1g vape cartridge labeled at 80% THC holds about 800mg, which puts a $40 cart near 5 cents per milligram. Run those numbers once and you can see whether that premium jar is worth double the price of the jar next to it.

Step 2: Know what actually moves price from state to state

Four things do most of the work:

• Excise tax. Some states stack a high percentage excise tax on top of sales tax. Others keep it low or exempt medical patients.
• License caps and competition. States with few retail licenses and limited grow capacity tend to stay expensive. States with open licensing and big outdoor harvests tend to get cheap.
• Medical vs recreational. Medical patients often pay no excise tax at all. If you qualify, that alone can cut your total by a third.
• Local rules. A city can add its own tax or ban sales outright, which pushes buyers into the next town.

Parameters I Check Before Paying

1. Out-the-door total. Ask for tax-included pricing before you commit. Menu prices are frequently pre-tax.
2. Milligrams, not percent. A 30% strain in a 1g jar is still only 300mg. Percent alone tells you nothing about value.
3. Batch or harvest date. Older flower loses potency and terpenes. A cheaper jar from last year is not a deal.
4. Lab results. Most packages carry a QR code. Check for potency and for failed pesticide or mold retests.
5. Unit size. A 3.5g jar almost always beats a 1g jar on price per gram, sometimes by 40% or more.
6. Fees. Delivery charges, ATM fees, and order minimums can add $10 or more to a small order.

Pitfalls That Skew the Comparison

• Comparing pre-tax prices between two states and calling it a win.
• Assuming higher THC means better value. Above roughly 25%, the price climb usually outpaces the potency climb.
• Ignoring weight. Per-gram pricing hides how much you save buying an eighth or a quarter.
• Treating "top shelf" as a standard. It is a marketing tier, not a lab measurement.
• Forgetting possession limits. Crossing a state line with product is a federal offense regardless of what either state allows.

A Quick Routine That Works

Pick your product type, find the THC in milligrams, divide the tax-included total by that number, then compare. Cheap states tend to sit near 3 to 6 cents per milligram for flower; expensive ones can run 12 to 20 cents. If a menu is far above the local norm for the same category, ask why. Sometimes the answer is quality. Sometimes it is just a corner store with no competition.
