Short answer

A pregnancy test does not detect cannabis. It measures human chorionic gonadotropin (hCG), a hormone the placenta releases after an embryo implants. THC and its metabolites are different molecules. Cannabis use cannot turn a pregnancy test positive, and it cannot turn one negative. If you want to know about cannabis exposure, you need a drug test. A pregnancy test will not answer that question.

Home urine tests use antibodies that bind to hCG. Most brands report a positive result at 20 to 25 mIU/mL. hCG reaches urine about 8 to 11 days after ovulation, and levels double about every 48 hours in early pregnancy. What a cannabis test measures

Urine drug screens look for THC-COOH, a metabolite the liver makes after THC enters the blood. A standard 5-panel or 10-panel employment screen includes this metabolite. Detection windows vary by use pattern. A single use can show for 1 to 3 days. Heavy long-term use can show for up to 30 days. Body fat, hydration, and frequency of use all change the window.

What can cause a wrong pregnancy test result

• Fertility drugs that contain hCG, including Pregnyl, Novarel, Profasi, and Ovidrel
• A recent miscarriage or termination, where hCG stays in the body for weeks
• Blood or protein in the urine
• Some prescription drugs, including anti-seizure medications, tranquilizers, diuretics, methadone, and some Parkinson's drugs
• Testing too early, diluted urine, or an expired test

Cannabis appears on none of these lists. THC does not bind the antibodies used in pregnancy tests, and it does not change hCG production.

Cannabis use during pregnancy
