Cannabis lotion is a topical. You rub it into your skin, and the cannabinoids in it, THC or CBD or both, bind with receptors in the skin and the tissue close to the surface. The effect stays local for most people. You feel it in the sore shoulder or the aching knee, not in your head. Onset usually runs 15 to 45 minutes, and one application tends to last two to four hours.

It is not a cure for anything, and it is not a replacement for medical care. Think of it as one more tool for sore muscles, stiff joints, and the kind of everyday ache that follows a long day on your feet.

THC, CBD, or both?

Three main types sit on dispensary shelves:

• CBD-dominant. No intoxicating effect. A good starting point if you want to see how your skin responds.
• THC-dominant. Still does not get you high in a topical form, but THC binds more directly to the CB1 and CB2 receptors tied to pain signaling.

Full-spectrum products keep the other plant compounds in the mix. Isolate products strip everything down to one cannabinoid. Neither is automatically better. Your skin and your budget will tell you more than a label claim will.

Reading the label

Total milligrams printed on the front of the jar is marketing. The number that matters is milligrams per ounce or per milliliter, because that tells you how much you get in a single squeeze.

• Carrier base. Coconut oil, jojoba, shea butter, and beeswax show up often. Pick one that suits your skin.
• Added actives. Menthol, camphor, arnica, and lidocaine bring their own cooling or numbing effect. That can be a plus, or it can muddy the picture when you are figuring out what worked.

Shelf life and storage

Most lotions hold up for 12 to 24 months from the batch date. Heat and light break down cannabinoids, so a cool, dark drawer beats a sunny windowsill. Tighten the lid after each use. If the texture separates or the smell turns, toss it.

What it won't do
