Spanish cedar: the standard

Spanish cedar is not a true cedar. It's a hardwood from the mahogany family. It's relatively soft, so it dents instead of cracking. Its grain is straight and tight. When you open a well-made humidor, you get that familiar spicy, sweet smell. That smell comes from oils in the wood. Those oils can also keep insects away and slow mold growth. But here's the catch: those same oils can transfer to your cannabis over time. If you store flower for months, some people say it picks up a cedar note. For that reason, some cannabis humidors use Spanish cedar only in the lining, or they skip wood altogether.

Mahogany (like Honduran mahogany) is another traditional humidor wood. It's more stable than Spanish cedar but has less scent. It doesn't buffer humidity quite as well because it's denser. Okoume is light and cheap but not as durable.

Aromatic cedar: don't do it

Eastern red cedar (often just called aromatic cedar) is what you find in closets and hope chests. It smells great in a sweater drawer. In a small sealed box with cannabis, that smell is a problem. The oils are volatile and strong. They will coat your flower and change its flavor. It also tends to be more acidic, which isn't ideal for long-term storage. Skip it.

Seasoning and upkeep

New wood linings need to be seasoned before you trust them with flower. Wipe them with distilled water or use a humidity pack. Let the wood absorb moisture slowly over a few days. If you rush it, the wood can warp. After that, keep the relative humidity around 58 to 62 percent for cannabis. That's lower than the 65 to 70 percent cigar humidors use. Lower humidity helps preserve terpenes and prevents mold.
