Cannabis Harvest Time Signs: When to Harvest Weed

You have four reliable signals: trichome color, pistil stage, calyx swelling, and the plant easing off. Trichomes count most. When most heads have gone from clear to cloudy with a few amber ones mixed in, the plant is in the window. Clear trichomes mean THC is still forming. Amber means THC is breaking down into CBN, which pushes the high toward dull and sleepy. Everything else on this list just confirms what the loupe already told you.

Start with trichomes, not pistils

I look at the buds, never the sugar leaves. Trichomes on leaves mature earlier and will fool you into cutting a week or two early. A 30x to 60x loupe or a cheap USB microscope is enough. Get light on the sample from the side and count heads.

• Clear: not ready, THC is still being made.
• Cloudy or milky all over: earliest reasonable cut, peak THC, most racy effect.
• Cloudy with 10 to 20 percent amber: where most people land, balanced.
• Half amber or more: late, more CBN, more couch.

Sample three or four spots, top cola, mid branch, and one lower bud. The top ripens first because it catches the most light. If the top reads 20 percent amber while the lowers are still clear, either cut in stages or accept a mixed jar.

Pistils and calyxes as a second read

Pistils are the hairs. They come out white and stand up. As the plant finishes, they darken to orange or brown and curl in toward the bud. When 70 to 90 percent have changed and no fresh white hairs are pushing, you are close. But pistils lie. Heat, wind, a rough watering, pollination, or a thirsty plant can brown them early. Never cut on pistil color alone.

Calyxes are the pods that make up the bud. Late in flower they swell and the bud puts on weight. Squeeze a top cola and a ripe one feels dense, not spongy. If your buds look fat but the calyxes are still tight and thin, wait.

The plant tells you too

• Fan leaves fade to yellow and purple as the plant pulls mobile nutrients into the flowers.
• Water use drops. A pot that drank every two days starts going three or four.
• Smell shifts. The skunky, fuel, or citrus notes get sharper and heavier in the last week.
• Growth stalls. Vertical stretch is long over and calyxes are not stacking new weight.

None of those alone is a harvest signal. Together with cloudy trichomes they are a green light.

Weeks matter, but only as a range

Breeder times are a guide, not a schedule. Most photoperiod hybrids finish somewhere between eight and ten weeks from the flip to 12/12, and that clock does not include the transition week when the plant is still deciding to flower. Autoflowers run 70 to 100 days from seed. If the calendar says week nine and the trichomes say clear, trust the trichomes. Two cuts a week apart on clones of the same mother can land in very different places, and that is normal.

Mistakes that cost you a good window

Cutting the day the first amber shows at the very top. Checking only the top cola. Judging under a blurple LED, which hides the amber. Forgetting to wipe grime off the loupe. Waiting one more week out of habit while the plant converts THC to CBN. If life gets in the way and the plant goes long, the flower still works, it just leans heavier and the terpenes fade a bit.

After the cut

Once you decide, chop at the base or in branches and hang the plant in a dark room around 60 F and 55 to 60 percent humidity. Aim for a slow seven to fourteen day dry, then trim and cure in jars for at least two weeks. The trichomes you counted will not get more potent on the line, and THC keeps breaking down at a slow rate, so dry cool and cure cool.

One last thing. Check at the same time each day, in the same light, with the same loupe. Consistency makes the call much easier.
