Cannabis for cramps: short answer
Cannabis may take the edge off cramps for some people, but it is not a proven first-line treatment. Heat and NSAIDs like ibuprofen have stronger evidence and fewer side effects. If you want to try cannabis, choose a low-THC product, start with a small dose, and keep standard pain relief as your base. Talk to a clinician first if you are pregnant, take prescription medication, or have heavy or worsening period pain.
Before you start
- A working diagnosis. Cramps can come from endometriosis, fibroids, infection, or an IUD, and those need different care.
- A medication list. THC and CBD can interact with blood thinners, SSRIs, antiseizure drugs, and some heart medicines.
- A legal, tested product. Buy from a licensed shop so the label matches what is in the package.
- A safe setting. Do not drive or handle machinery after THC.
How to use cannabis for cramps
- Rule out other causes with your doctor or gynecologist. Keep a symptom log for two or three cycles and bring it to the visit.
- Use standard relief first: a heating pad, ibuprofen or naproxen at the label dose, water, and light movement. Note what each one does on a 0 to 10 pain scale.
- Pick a product form based on how fast you need relief. Inhaled cannabis works in minutes and fades within two to three hours. Edibles take one to two hours and last longer. Topicals act only where you rub them and do not get you high.
- Start with a low THC dose, such as 2.5 mg, or a CBD-only product at 10 to 25 mg. Cut an edible into smaller pieces if the label dose is higher.
- Take it in the evening or on a day when you do not have to drive. Set aside two hours to see how your body reacts.
- Wait two hours before taking more if you used an edible. Redosing too early is the most common cause of an uncomfortable high.
- Record the dose, product, time, and pain score in a note on your phone. After two or three cycles you will see whether a specific dose or ratio helps.
- Stop and reassess after a month if your pain has not improved. Cannabis is a tool, not a substitute for a diagnosis.
Dosing basics
THC and CBD dosing is individual, and labels can vary by a small margin. A common starting point for beginners is 2.5 mg of THC or 10 to 25 mg of CBD. Effects build with regular use, and tolerance can raise the dose you need. Keep the dose as low as you can while still getting relief.
Inhaled
Effects start within a few minutes and peak around 15 to 30 minutes. This makes it easy to stop early, but smoking irritates the lungs. Vaporizing at a low temperature cuts smoke exposure without removing it.
Edibles
Effects start in 30 to 120 minutes and can last six to eight hours. Because of the delay, edibles are a poor choice for cramps that peak fast.
Topicals
Balms and lotions with THC or CBD sit on the skin. They are a low-risk option for abdominal massage and do not cause a high.
What the evidence says
Research on cannabis for menstrual cramps is thin. Most studies look at chronic pain in general, not dysmenorrhea. Reviews find that cannabinoids may reduce pain for some people, but the effects are modest and the studies are small. Surveys show a fair number of people with period pain try cannabis on their own, which is not the same as proof that it works.
Risks and side effects
- Impairment, drowsiness, and slower reaction time after THC.
- Dry mouth, dizziness, and a racing heart at higher THC doses.
- Anxiety or a panic-like reaction, most often with edibles.
- Daily use can lead to dependence and to cannabis hyperemesis, a syndrome of repeated vomiting.
- Smoking harms the lungs. Cannabis smoke carries many of the same irritants as tobacco smoke.
- Pregnancy and breastfeeding. Avoid cannabis, since major medical bodies advise against use during this period.
When to see a doctor
Get care if pain stops you from working or going to school, lasts more than a few days, comes with heavy bleeding or large clots, happens during sex, or has gotten worse over time. Cramps that do not respond to NSAIDs, or that start after age 25, need a closer look. Cannabis can mask pain without fixing the cause.
