Inspecting a clone in the tray
Ask to lift one plant out of the tray. What I look at, in order:
- Roots. White or cream colored, with visible tips reaching the edge of the cube or plug. Brown, slimy, or mushy roots mean root rot, and that plant will stall for weeks.
- Stem. Firm, upright, matching the thickness you would expect for the height. A stretched, floppy stem means it was kept too far from light.
- Leaves. Even color, no mottling, no yellow between the veins, no twisting. Variegation-like patterns and brittle leaves are worth walking away from, since viroid symptoms can look like that.
- Undersides. Spider mite webbing and mite speckling show up on the bottom of the leaf first. Check the newest growth too.
- The tray itself. Fungus gnats hovering, algae on rockwool, standing water, or a shared saucer of runoff are all signs of sloppy handling.

Provenance and testing
