What the research really shows
Dig through PubMed and you find the same pattern: case reports, chart reviews, and a handful of open-label trials with 60 to 150 kids each, mostly from two or three research groups. They report improvements on parent-rated scales for hyperactivity, sleep, and social communication. But parents who pay for a treatment and hope it works tend to rate it well. THC is the part that gets you high, and the developing brain is not a good place for it. Heavy teen use is linked to problems with attention, memory, and learning, plus higher psychosis risk in people who are already vulnerable. CBD is not harmless either. It can raise liver enzymes, cause drowsiness and stomach upset, and it blocks the liver enzymes that clear other drugs, which can push up blood levels of medications like clobazam and valproate. A child on seizure meds or risperidone can end up over-sedated. And if there are edibles in the house, lock them up. They look like candy, and child poisonings from edibles climbed sharply after legalization.
What actually has evidence behind it
- Early intensive behavioral intervention, including ABA, started young
- Speech-language therapy and occupational therapy
- Parent training programs that teach you how to handle meltdowns and rigidity
- School supports through an IEP or 504 plan
- Melatonin for sleep, which has better pediatric data than cannabis
- Risperidone or aripiprazole for severe irritability and aggression, both FDA approved for kids with autism, both needing monitoring
If you still want to explore it
- Start with your child's pediatrician or a developmental specialist, not a dispensary counter.
- Ask whether any clinical trial is enrolling near you. That is the only setting where a child should get this.
- Do not drop a treatment that works to try one that might not.
- Ask about interactions with every medication and supplement your child takes.
- Treat any product marketed as a cure for autism as a sales pitch, because that is what it is.
Bottom line
I sell cannabis for a living, and I still will not tell you it is a pediatric autism treatment. The honest position is that we do not know if it helps, we do know it can hurt, and the kids who need help most deserve better than a guess.
