What the interview actually tests
Two things: can you stay compliant, and can you sell without pretending to be a doctor. Expect scenarios.
- A customer's ID expired yesterday. You refuse the sale and stay calm.
- Someone asks what helps their back pain. You do not give medical advice. You describe products, effects, and dosing, and you point them to a pharmacist or their doctor where your state allows one on site.
- They want four ounces. You know your state's purchase limit and can explain it without a fight.
- A first-timer who has never used cannabis. You start low, talk about edible onset times of 30 to 120 minutes, and you do not upsell.

Pay, schedule, and the honest parts
Budtender pay is hourly and lands near the local entry-level retail rate. Tips can be a real part of the check in busy shops and close to nothing in slow ones. Schedules skew nights, weekends, and 4/20. You will stand for eight hours, handle a lot of cash, and answer the same three questions all day. If you like retail and you like the plant, that is a fair trade. If you want a quiet desk, it is not.
Skip the paid certification pitches
If a company charges you for a budtender certificate that your state does not require, that is a product, not a credential. State badge fees go to the state, not to a training brand.
