The short version: order by 8:30 or 9 p.m. from a shop that holds both a California state license and a Los Angeles retail delivery permit, and confirm the cutoff time, delivery fee, and order minimum before you build a cart. Legal cannabis delivery in Los Angeles generally ends at 10 p.m. under state rules, so a true late night run means ordering well before then instead of chasing storefronts that advertise 2 a.m. drops. Shops that promise around-the-clock arrival are usually either unlicensed or quoting a window the driver cannot legally keep.

What late night actually means for licensed LA delivery
California limits when licensed retailers may hand off cannabis goods to customers, and most licensed Los Angeles shops stop accepting orders 30 to 90 minutes before their posted closing time so drivers can finish routes. The practical effect is that the last reliable order window on a weeknight is usually mid to late evening, and Friday or Saturday nights tighten it further because volume spikes and ETAs stretch. Some delivery services operate under local rules in neighboring cities with different hours, which is why a menu might look like it stays open later than the shop down the street. Check where the license is issued before you assume the hours apply to your address.

What to check before you place the order
- Two licenses, not one. A state retailer or delivery license from the Department of Cannabis Control plus a Los Angeles retail delivery permit. The license number should appear on the site and on your receipt.
- The real cutoff. Ask for the last order time, not the closing time. They are different numbers and the gap catches people out.
- Delivery zone. Confirm your address is inside the radius. Shops frequently serve a core area and decline edge addresses after a certain hour.
- ETA and tracking. A quoted range beats a vague promise. Text updates on the day of delivery are a good sign of a functioning dispatch system.
- Minimum and fee structure. Ask whether the fee is flat, distance based, or waived above a spend threshold, and whether tax is already in the menu price.
- Payment methods. Cash, debit through a cashless ATM, and in some cases bank transfer. Cannabis is still largely outside standard card processing.
- Menu accuracy. Live inventory matters more at night, when popular flower and vape SKUs sell out. A shop that calls you about substitutions is doing it right.
- Packaging and testing labels. Legitimate product carries potency, batch, and testing information. Loose or unlabeled edibles are a hard no.
Parameter bands worth knowing
- Last order window: 30 to 90 minutes before posted close. Treat the top of that range as a hard stop.
- Realistic ETA: 45 to 90 minutes on a normal weeknight, longer on weekends and during major events or rain.
- Order minimum: $0 to $50. Many shops drop the minimum once your cart passes a set threshold.
- Delivery fee: $0 to $10, with some shops waiving it above a spend level.
- Tax: 15 percent state excise tax plus applicable local taxes, sometimes folded into displayed prices and sometimes added at checkout. Read the line items.
- Driver tip: 10 to 20 percent is customary, in cash, and separate from the order total.
Pitfalls to avoid
Prepayment requests through a peer-to-peer payment app are the clearest warning sign. Legitimate delivery operations collect on arrival or through a documented in-app payment flow, and they do not need a deposit to hold your order. Be equally wary of menus with no potency data, no batch numbers, and no license reference anywhere on the page. Prices advertised as unusually low often hide a fee stack that appears at checkout, or a minimum that pushes the cart to double what you planned. Delivery to a public place, a bar, or a hotel lobby is not permitted, and drivers will not hand off in a parking lot. Confirm your address is residential, private, and accessible, and have your government ID ready at the door. Anyone delivering cannabis to you must check that you are 21 or older.

How to make a late order go smoothly
Build the cart early and save your address, gate code, and delivery notes in the account before the evening rush. Keep your phone on and the ringer up, because dispatch calls when a driver is close. Have cash on hand for the tip and for the order if the shop is cash-only. Order from one shop rather than splitting across two, since each delivery is a separate dispatch. If you need a specific strain or a high-dose edible, call and confirm stock instead of trusting a cached menu page.
Frequently asked questions
Can I order cannabis delivery after 10 p.m. in Los Angeles?
Under state rules, licensed delivery generally stops at 10 p.m., so most Los Angeles shops will not accept new orders that late. Some nearby jurisdictions set different hours, and unlicensed operators ignore the limit entirely. If a service promises a 2 a.m. arrival, ask for the license number and the city it operates under.
Do I have to be home for the delivery?
Yes. The driver must verify your age and identity in person at the delivery address, so someone 21 or older has to receive the order. Deliveries cannot be left at the door or handed to a minor or a neighbor.
Can I pay by credit card?
Most shops cannot process standard credit cards. Expect cash, debit through a cashless ATM, or a documented in-app payment method. Ask before the driver leaves the shop so you are not hunting for an ATM at midnight.
How far ahead should I order?
Two hours before you want the product is a comfortable buffer on a weeknight. On weekends or around major events, order earlier and accept that the ETA range will be wider than the app suggests.
What happens if an item is out of stock?
A well-run shop calls or texts before substituting. Confirm the substitution policy when you order, and set a rule for whether the driver can swap a comparable product or should adjust the total instead.
Should I tip the driver?
Tipping is not required but is customary, in cash, and appreciated. Ten to twenty percent is a normal range for a delivery in Los Angeles traffic.
