How to Keep Cannabis Out of Reach of Pets | Pop's Cannabis

Short answer

Keep every cannabis product in a locked container, then put that container where a pet cannot climb, jump, or nose it open. Treat THC like a prescription bottle. Child-resistant is not pet-resistant. A zipper bag, purse, drawer, or countertop jar does not count as safe storage.

Why pets get into cannabis so easily

Dogs explore with their noses and mouths. Cats jump. Edibles smell like food, vape carts look like chew toys, and dropped flower or a used roach can disappear in seconds. A dog can work a backpack zipper with a paw and a nose. Risk goes up when people are relaxed, hosting friends, or packing in a hurry.

The storage setup I would use

1. Pick a hard case with a real latch. I look for a latch that takes two hands, not a zipper.
2. Keep it high and shut. A top shelf inside a closed cabinet beats a coffee table every time.
3. Store edibles in their labeled package inside the case. The label helps a vet if something goes wrong.
4. Lock up oils, butter, tinctures, and capsules the same way. A fridge is not safe unless the container is locked and labeled.
5. Use one spot. A single locked box is easier to check than five hiding places.

Edibles and drinks are the big risk

Chocolate, xylitol, raisins, and nut butters can be toxic on their own. Add THC and a small piece can hit a small pet hard. Keep gummies, brownies, cookies, mints, and infused drinks behind the same lock as flower. Do not leave a half-eaten edible on a plate. Do not put one in a pocket or purse.

Guests, purses, and party rules

Ask guests to keep bags and coats off the floor. Provide a closed closet or a high hook. If someone brings their own cannabis, give them a locked spot or ask them to leave it in the car. That sounds strict until a dog eats a gummy from an open tote. Check the floor before bed after a gathering. A quick flashlight pass catches dropped flower and crumbs.

If your pet gets into cannabis

Common signs include lethargy, wobbliness, vomiting, dilated pupils, dribbling urine, tremors, and in serious cases seizures. Call your vet or a pet poison hotline right away. Have the package, the amount you think was eaten, your pet's weight, and the time. Do not induce vomiting unless a vet tells you to. Keep the pet warm, quiet, and away from stairs. Do not wait for the high to pass on its own.

Travel and cleanup

On trips, use a locked smell-proof bag and keep it out of the hotel bed and floor. Clean rolling trays, grinders, and counters after use. Check pockets and laundry before washing. If you smoke outside, pick up roaches and ash. A pet's nose does not need much.
