How potent is kief?
Most lab-tested kief lands between 25% and 60% THC by weight. Flower from the same plant usually runs 15% to 25%. So a gram of kief carries roughly two to three times the THC of a gram of the bud it came from. That range is wide on purpose. Two jars can sit at opposite ends of it and both be labeled honestly.

The short version: kief is concentrated trichomes, and trichomes are where cannabinoids get made. Take out the leaf and stem, and the potency number climbs.

Why kief tests higher than flower
Glandular trichomes coat the surface of the flower and hold most of the THC, CBD, and terpenes. Kief is what falls off when those glands break loose and pass through a screen. You are dropping plant fiber and keeping the resin. Weight for weight, resin is denser in cannabinoids.

What stays behind matters just as much. A rough sift drags along bits of leaf and stalk, which adds weight but no THC. Clean, pale kief will read higher on a lab report than a green, gritty pile made from the same starting material.
What moves the number
Starting material
Weak trim makes weak kief. A 12% strain cannot produce 50% kief no matter how fine the screen. High-resin genetics and a fully ripe harvest set the ceiling. Nothing downstream raises it.
Screen size
Sifting screens commonly run 70 to 150 microns. Tighter screens, around 70 to 90 microns, catch mostly ripe gland heads and give a cleaner, stronger product, but the yield drops. Wider screens give you more weight and more contamination.
Color and texture
Pale blond or light tan kief with a powdery, sandy feel is usually the cleanest. Dark green or brown kief with visible leaf flecks carries more filler. Color alone will not tell you the THC level, but it tells you how much junk is in the jar.
Decarboxylation
Raw kief holds mostly THCA, not THC. Those are different numbers on a label and different experiences. Smoked or vaped, the heat converts THCA as you go. Eaten, it needs to be decarbed first, and heating costs you a little total mass along the way.
Age and storage
THC slowly degrades to CBN when kief sits in warm air and light. A jar left on a sunny shelf for a year will test lower than the day it was sifted, and it will feel flatter. Keep it sealed, cool, and dark.
Reading a kief label
- Total THC is the number that matters for dosing. It combines THC with the THCA converted by heat.
- THCA on its own will look high on raw kief and tells you little about what you will feel.
- Look for a batch date. Kief is not improving with time.
- Watch for total weight versus cannabinoid weight. A 1 gram jar at 45% holds about 450 mg of THC, which is a lot.
Dosing without overshooting
Treat kief like a concentrate, not like flower. A little goes far. If you usually pack a 0.3 gram bowl of 20% flower, that is roughly 60 mg of THC. Topping that bowl with 0.05 gram of 45% kief adds about 22 mg, which is a real jump for most people. New users should start with a pinch, a tenth of a gram or less, and wait.
Edibles are where kief catches people out. Homemade kief butter is easy to overshoot because the potency of the starting material is a guess unless you have a lab report. Decarb at about 240 F for 30 to 40 minutes, then calculate from the labeled total THC, not from the raw weight.
The bottom line
Kief is strong because it is mostly resin, and resin is mostly cannabinoids. Expect 25% to 60% THC, lean toward the lower end for rough sifts, and dose by milligrams rather than by eyeball.
